The Mods are not the forum police.. check this out.

communityspark.com/the-real-purpose-of-forum-moderators-revealed

This is how someone would quote a link.

The biggest mistake forum owners make when taking on forum moderators is expecting them to police the community. Many see the main role of moderators as enforcers of the site rules, as people who delete posts they don't like and lock topics the moment they run off-course. If these are the priorities of your moderators, you are doing it all wrong.

so people, I guess, its true.. we cant really go to them. cause this is not
what they are there for.. they are supposed to allow alot of freedom.. lol

Do you have moderators on your forum? Have you made their role clear to them? Have you advised them that their primary role should be to create content and encourage member interaction? Share your thoughts and opinions by leaving a comment below.

what is their role on PF?

I Laughed when I seen this.

so lets get the forum members opinions on this.

OH I know there are a few who have something to say.

what is their role on PF?

Forum Gestapo, that's what it says on the nametags.

I'm curious to hear from people as well. Would they stick around if there was more heavy handed moderating? That is, more censorship of all points of view, not just the ones you disagree with?

not just the ones you disagree with?

I thought you were going to drop that.. this is a different issue.

Liabilities of forum owners and moderators
Several lawsuits have been brought against forums and moderators claiming libel and damage. A recent case is the scubaboard lawsuit where a business in the Maldives filed a suit against scubaboard for libel and defamation in January 2010.

For the most part, though, forum owners and moderators in the United States are protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which states that "[n]o provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."

You have to go by what the man on the Clapham Omnibus would say, convex. That is the objective test of reasonableness which is now applied beyond the philosophical dimension. Nobody should be hurt by certain words here if they apply the 'sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me' adage.

The problem with liberalism is its elasticity. Being too permissive only fuels those with more sinister agendas. As it stands, the current crew of Mods seem to know what to stamp out and what not to.

Drop what? That's the problem with censorship in general as pointed out in the comments in that link. I was thinking more along the lines of perceived anti-Polish/Jewish/whatever views. Should someone posting negative things about Germans, Russians, Jews, Poles, Brits, Americans, Immigrants, whatever be censored? If one user writes the Communist Polish secret police was primarily run by Jews, and another writes that concentration camps were staffed by Poles, which should be censored? Both? Neither? Do we censor facts? Who does the fact checking?

Private message
Main article: Personal message
A private message, or PM for short, is a message sent in private from a member to one or more other members. The ability to send so-called carbon copies is sometimes available. When sending a carbon copy (cc), the users to whom the message is sent directly will not be aware of the recipients of the carbon copy or even if one was sent in the first place.[example 1]

Private messages are generally used for personal conversations. They can also be used with tripcodes—a message is addressed to a public trip and can be picked up by typing in the tripco

oh look what I found !! someone asked this question and was lied too. so its true
that pms can be seen in a form of carbon copies..

I am all about truth.. :)

LOL spell check.

I'm not following you here. You can't put people in cc on private messages here.

Patrycja19
3 Dec 2010  #8

you might not be able to but I am sure its possible.

I certainly hope no ones messages get read.. especially once they go to admin.

when they didnt give permission for all to see.

but its prob to late for that.

You should leave topic titles alone. It's totally unnecessary, and most thread titles suck monkey balls anyway!

You should not discuss private matters with people when they aren't giving you any reason or invitation to discuss such matters about themselves with you.

You should really listen to people who ask for their profiles to be deleted. It's really not so complicated or hard to delete something, but you guys just don't want to! Because? Right. Because you're behaving like the social Gestapo.

You should always interfere whenever things get too personal between people, unless they both express the desire to discuss such things with eachother, otherwise it will just be another unwanted intrusion of someone's privacy.

You should not accept the constant bashing and degrading of women, or Polish women in particular, especially not on a Polish forum, not even under a guise of free speech. It's humiliating. It's sexist, and make the forum look like it's infested with impotent, frustrated old men who can't ever say no to their wives. It's silly. Dumb. Moronic.

You should not accept blatant racism. I don't know how many times I've said it, and I don't know how many times other people have said it, but I guess I will repeat myself, because I feel like a Parrot today.

This is my opinion, and if you don't like it, you can stick a banana in your ass, and hopefully explode when you try to fart in someone else's direction.

:)

Thanks.

One could theoretically copy the contents of a message and forward it on. Mods have no access to private messages other than their own.

Patrycja19
3 Dec 2010  #11

its says its possible, maybe you dont have it, but its possible. so quit beaten around
the bush.. its not like its a few light years away from happening, its truth and people should
know not everything is private.

This is my opinion, and if you don't like it, you can stick a banana in your ass, and hopefully explode when you try to fart in someone else's direction.

lol.. just make sure I am no longer in the room when this happens so that I do not
get the feedback..

Some here want heavy moderation to the extent the forum deviates from public opinion and mainstream.

Drop what?

All that quasi-intellectual gibberish. Common sense isn't too complicated you know.

I was thinking more along the lines of perceived anti-Polish/Jewish/whatever views.

There's a difference between something that could be percieved as slightly negative, and something that's obviously damaging or humiliating.

Should someone posting negative things about Germans, Russians, Jews, Poles, Brits, Americans, Immigrants, whatever be censored?

If the poster's only intention is to ridicule, insult, flame, troll, bash, discriminate, degrade, humiliate or slander, and seems to have no other arguments besides discriminatory reading material, then yes, that should be censored. (Kicked off permanently.)

If one user writes the Communist Polish secret police was primarily run by Jews, and another writes that concentration camps were staffed by Poles, which should be censored? Both? Neither? Do we censor facts? Who does the fact checking?

Neither. But you should probably close the thread and consider deleting it if such posts get reported more than a couple of times. I don't mind strong language or strong opinions at all, but I do mind it when people feel deeply offended, humiliated or genuinely upset. If people tell you such things, the alarm bell should ring for you guys. You shouldn't let certain things drag on for too long.

Just common sense.

;)

Thanks.

It's technically possible, but not implemented on polishforums. Again, mods can't read your PMs. On the other hand, that does not prevent a person from disclosing information received in a private message. The system is only as confidential as far as you trust the recipient.

I am on another message board and one of the few rules they have are that there are to be NO PERSONAL attacks. You can disagree with the thread, argue about the thread, but nothing like name calling, or insults.

If you want to do that, you are supposed to take it to a PM between the two of you, not on the board. They are fine with you fighting to your heart's content in PM.

Other than that there is not much censorship. However, since it is a support site, there are no racist remarks or comparing of things like my country is better than yours, or your country did this to me.

Just differences in opinions or beliefs as to the sincerity of the OP or those who offer help.

The Mods have come on a helluva lot in the last year, I don't know what it was but they've really stepped up their game...however, I'm still not happy that racist and bigoted stuff gets by them.

But, saying that, the nonsense sh*t of people coming on tryin to sell stuff or lonely gits looking for a penpal gets nipped quickly and now that the ignore button is here we can block some of the regular annoying whinebags.

If you want to see some heavy-handed "censorship" then join boards.ie and check in on the After Hours...(the name is misleading)... thread...it's heavy-handed but they do a really good job there, they've had legal action threatened against them a few times so their mods are really savy on what legally can be hosted on the site. I'm not sure how this works with PL, is it a Polish site or a Yankie one? I presume if it's a Yankie one then the libel laws aren't as strict as if it were hosted in Europe and hence why some grey-area stuff is allowed.

That's not their fault - the forum admin has publicly said that it's fine, as long as it's on topic. Can't blame the mods for that one.

Yep, it's hosted in yankland. They have the law that internet providers aren't legally responsible for the content, unlike in Europe where they are. It's still a grey area, but as far as I can work out, the US government isn't worried about what's posted online as long as it isn't hurting them directly.

Personal attacks are just the way some people express their argument... And in writing it can really come across in a negative way.

Still. It's pretty easy to ignore it isn't it? I mean it doesn't just come outta nowhere. If you're being personally attacked you must have illicited some form of response to contribute to that situation.

If there are members here you feel insulted by, just don't engage in discussion with them. It's that simple! Especially if they know your:

a. gender
b. nationality
c. personal history

But you can't honestly be offended by someone you've never met, surely???

delphiandomine
3 Dec 2010  #19

You'd be surprised. Some people on here seem to make it their mission to be offended and to BRING THE PAIN. All of them seem to have one thing in common - they live here and hate it.

Yea, well, I've a problem with that, or is it that racism isn't illegal in yankieville? I cannot stand such comments..sexist or homophobic ones too and once I do see one it gets hit by the ignore button

the US government isn't worried about what's posted online as long as it isn't hurting them directly.

hehe! Wikileaks :)

Should someone posting negative things about Germans, Russians, Jews, Poles, Brits, Americans, Immigrants, whatever be censored?

Why not divide threads by topic? That way only people who wish to engage with a certain opinion have to see it. I propose :

Moaning about Jews
Moaning about Russians
Moaning about Germans
Slavs unite!
Poland is great (but I've never been there)
My great grandad was half Polish
I want to meet chicks
I am a profezunal English teechur

Well moaning on forums is sad and doesn't achieve anything. But I can see why people do it. They like to get a rise out of you, and who can blame them? I mean if you find yourself here on a daily basis, there must be something wrong with your life?

So,

See you tomorrow? ;D

The first post in this thread was EXCELLENT !
NOTHING has changed in the last eight years either.

Dear bias secret Mod,

24hrs time off for the 3 of you - next time use PM or private emails for private and off-topic conversations.

Why use PM, YOU are deaf to it, at least here we can embarrass you enough to hold you half way accountable.
You were told by both Joker and myself in PM's THREE TIMES EACH over a two day period that he was Trolling and Baiting and you refused to do squat about it until we chimed in with frustration.

SIX TIMES it was brought to your attention by PM and multiple times in my posts in my 'Camp Trump' thread over a two day period.

I even asked you to clean my thread up of the Off-Topic Trolling and Baiting in a post in that thread (that you conveniently deleted) so you sure the hell were aware of it !

WTF do you want us to do when you do NOTHING to correct the problem ?????
Like that is what you were waiting for, (TWO DAYS ignoring the Abuse) for us to get pis sed enough to reply to the Baiting so you could give us all warnings.

How about the next time someone tells you there is a problem you do your job and nip it in the ass before it gets out of control again.

YOU are the guilty one to let it get out of control in the first place, don't blame us for chiming back to someone talking smack about our country and military when YOU refuse to do anything about it.

YOU are the problem here.
Now watch this thread get closed like they all do when the Mod starts taking heat to the truth.

As you've been told multiple times, you're free to leave if you don't like the moderation here.

Something to consider, perhaps?

I like how is this forum ruled. One here can get much more then from BBC, CNN, ITN, Fox, Deutsche Welle and worse (hardly worse but let`s say).

I sense hand of some gentle and subtle female influence here. And fine gentlemen, sure.

I have to agree, that really was a first class meltdown. I wonder why he finds it so difficult to abide by the very simple rules on here?
