Are the new energy-efficient light bulbs a health hazard?

Obviously the manufacturers of conventional light bulbs wants to sell what he produces and will sing their praises and tear down the competition. And the energy.efficient producer will do likewise. So whom can one believe?

Energy Efficient Bulbs Cause Anxiety, Migraines, and Even Cancer. Reasons to Go Back To Incandescent Bulbs. Many of us in the effort to save energy and money, replaced our old standard light bulbs with environmentally-friendly with the new generation energy saving light bulbs. However, the new generation of energy efficient light bulbs are so toxic that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created an emergency protocol you need to follow in the event of a bulb breakage, due to the poison gas that is released. If broken indoors, these light bulbs release 20 times the maximum acceptable mercury concentration into the air, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute for Germany's Federal Environment Agency.

Whaddya think?

I don't much care about Mercury coming out if you break a bulb (aren't they plastic now anyway) but just don't like them. I prefer traditional bulbs that you can use with a dimmer switch. The problem with halogen ones is that unless you have lots of he smallest size or larger ones but very well shaded, they're too bright.

LED are better, and doubtless the next thing to follow them onto the market will be better still.

I prefer the quality of light from incandescent light bulbs to the light from compact fluorescent or LED, I also prefer the sound and power of a naturally aspirated big bore V8 gasoline engine to the whirring of an electric motor of the noise of a turbocharged 4 banger diesel, and I prefer the smell and feel of clothes that have been washed in hot water to clothes washed at 30 or 20 degrees C, and I prefer the quality and feel of heat from a traditional fireplace to modern central heating, and I prefer to hold and read a printed book or newspaper to reading from a tablet or computer...

But environmental and economic realities mean we have to make compromises, and improved energy efficiency in lighting is a necessity today, not a luxury.

I'm very fond of LED lighting - installing them cut around 40zl/month off our electricity bill, and they're not at all harsh on the eyes. Some of new "smart bulbs" are amazing as well, but still pricey.

What we know as energy saving bulbs are horrific though, and I don't blame people for hating them.
