And that's one of the differences between Poland and the US - I don't have to have a gun in every room or on every floor of the house, because I don't have to live in fear of a home invasion. When there's some loud noise I don't flinch or duck under a table like Americans do in Europe, because I don't have to fear a mass shooting, etc. We can send our kids to school without the fear them being massacred with a AR-15-style rifle. We can go to a concert or a club or church without worrying about ending up dead, because some nutcase with a gun didn't feel well today.

No, I didn't, but I've read comments of Americans talking about their culture shocks in Europe and that was one of them.


It never happened to me or anyone I know. I've never heard of such a thing happening anywhere I lived. The only "home invasions" at night or early in the morning that people ever mentioned to me were by counter-terrorism teams (Polish SWAT) ;D I kid you not ;D And those where only two instances:

1. One in Warsaw - because they entered the wrong flat for some reason, the guy they were looking for lived at the floor above my friend's flat (one of them checked if they didn't damage her door lol).
2. One in Wrocław - it happened to my cousin who was renting a flat from a guy who turned out to be wanted by Polish police, but he was abroad then. Well, it wasn't really a "home invasion" - they just banged the door really loudly and yelled to open the door, but they would enter forcibly if my cousin didn't open the door in time :P

And that's what we have police for - they have guns, so we wouldn't have to and so we could be a happy nation ;D - enjoy :D:

It is relevant, because it shows how unlikely what you described is to happen in Poland. Of course, it doesn't mean that there are no break-ins in Poland - they are, but most of the time they happen when the owners are not present at the house or flat - it happens when they go away for summer holidays or are visting family for Christmas/Easter or when they're at work. Thieves observe the house or flat and go in only when they know that noone's inside. Armed robbers breaking in in the middle of the night when owners are at the house/flat would be something very rare, stupid and unlikely to happen.

Also, break-ins in Poland usually happen to stand-alone houses and if they happen in a block of flats it's usually the flats on the ground floor. I don't live on the ground floor. The worst thing that can usually happen in a regular neighbourhood like mine is a break-in into the block of flats' basement. And even that seems pretty rare.


Well, that would depend on the situation:

1. If they managed to enter my place without waking me up then I wouldn't be able to do anything if they caught me being asleep, obviously.
2. If I wasn't asleep and heard that someone is trying to break in and I'd be alone at the flat - I'd probably shout at the door that I'm calling the police and make a lot of noise to wake up the neighbours (we have very thin walls in our block of flats lol). That would be normally enough to scare off a regular thief, I think. And then I would call the police.
3. If I was awake, home alone and I could see/hear that the thieves are about to enter my place then I'd lock myself in the bathroom, lie down in a bathtub and quitely call the police.

OK, maybe my neighbourhood isn't 100% "regular" due to some buildings in my neighbourhood having connections to uniformed services, but I don't know how much of an impact it has on safety here... Maybe it has some if the thieves know the neighbourhood... 🤔 Personally, when I come back home on my own and it's dark already then I always choose a route next to those buildings, because I feel safer then :)

Wow, really? Nothing bad ever really happened to me when I was coming back home on my own after dark, but if I said that I was never worried that something might happen when I was walking down some desolate, dark little street then I would be lying... Bad stuff do sometimes happen to people even in Poland and I want to be sure that it won't happen to me, so I always try to pick safer routes and be aware of my surroundings. I don't know, maybe it's due to the fact that for some time I've experienced stalking and during that time I was afraid of being outside after dark... Po zmroku wracałam do domu z duszą na ramieniu i chyba mi tak do pewnego stopnia już zostało... So, I guess I know from personal experience that there are some psychos out there and that probably impacted me and the way I look at my personal safety... 🤔

I did have for example situation when I was walking back home in the afternoon/evening and a car pulled over asking if I would like 'to show them good time'. I said no and they drove off. I was about 15 and wore jeans and big hoodie
I probably did have fleating moments of fear but nothing I remember.


That would put big impact.
