Hey Ptak, how many deer are you feeding this winter ?
I have about 40 of them yarded up here for the winter that are costing me a fortune to feed them.
The snow is so deep that they can't go anywhere.
I put alfalfa out and the little ones follow me around knowing that I will be dumping a five gallon bucket of corn next.
I can almost touch them but not quite.

  • thirty feet from them

  • off my back deck

  • sleeping all day safe next to my house

  • pot of venison chili .....oh yeah !

Do you feed them or do they feed you?

johnny reb
15 Feb 2025  #8

Both, I feed forty of them all winter, they eat my garden all summer and I shoot one or two in the fall for my freezer.
Ever have venison Polish sausage or venison jerky ? Yummy !
Ptak knows.......
Monday a pack of coyotes came up here sniffing around where the deer had been bedding and were met by Bertha my 12 gauge scatter gun with double odd buckshot.
Killed two of them and put the hurts on two and haven't seen them since.
The eagles have been feasting on their carcasses all week.
It has been brutal cold here which should be hitting Europe this next week.
Have to sleep close to the crack to stay warm. 😏

Nice photos - are coyotes able to take down deer ?

johnny reb

Double ought not double odd.
are coyotes able to take down deer ?

Yes, the way they do it is they chase the deer and keep nipping (biting) at their back legs until they get the deer bleeding good.
Eventually the deer gets weak and can't run anymore.
The coyotes then move in and rip the guts out of the deer while it is still alive.
Nature at work.

Hey Ptak, how many deer are you feeding this winter ?

Only 12. About one gallon of corn a day is sufficient. In previous winters, I had some deer almost domesticated. My next-door neighbor is feeding them out of her hand. She has the time and patience to play with them; she has retired for a long time. Of course, "my" deer are untouchable, but a couple of miles from my home, I can get all the deer I need for my consumption. One of my freezers is full of venison; I can't give it away soon enough.I make traditional Polish
bigos, delicious stuff. One of the importante ingridiences is smoke venison .Originally called Hunters Stew, not Polish Bigos.Wybryki krnąbrnego koziołka , desecration of Polish delicacy.Fricken Pawian ,kalakut:::)))

Even smoked deer meat?

You mean make venison jerky ?
Yes, it's ten times better than beef jerky.
Very easy to make other than being very time consuming.

16 Feb 2025  #29

In my experience, it is time-consuming but consumed in no time. Magically vanishes in no time at all.You know Pawian bigos , you will be paid to try, and as a bonus, you get the medal if you don't vomit while eating paskudztwo:::))) Sh*t, last time Paw published the picture of the dish, I thought, oh, oh, Paw's barf in the plate. After reading the ingredients list it becomes apparent, without his wife's input, Paws dishes are not fit for human consumption:::)))

I tried making the South African version of jerky using wild boar meat and it didn't work out - could not get enough wind on it
