There is a major difference between now and 2016: the amount of mail-in ballots expected in this election. Even before RBG's death, it was thought there would be a very high probability that there will be a court challenge to the counting of ballots. The Supreme Court will decide those challenges. You can't have a 4-4 decision, because that settles nothing and could throw things into utter chaos.

It would be great if the Senate could strike a deal where they hold off the SCOTUS appointment and eliminate the mail-in ballot canvassing and demand some form of identifying the person with each mail-in ballot. Highly unlikely that kind of compromise will be had.

I would also fear a forced 5-3 vote. I could see Roberts aligning his vote with the more liberal justices (who I'd doubt would vote in favor of Trump's legal position, regardless of the law) just to avoid a significant constitutional crisis and upheaval. Roberts is above all an institutionalist--who is hellbent on protecting the institution of the court. That kind of vote is specious and does damage to our electoral democracy.

I think this is a very good example of perception belying facts.

NATO is stronger now than it was 4 years ago. Nearly all NATO countries have increased their spending on defense. Plus, the US has tripled its spending on military outlays IN EUROPE and has increased the number of troops IN EUROPE during Trump's time in office. So, the facts say something different than the perception of Trump not being commited to NATO.

Additionally, it appears that other NATO countries may be more willing than ever to start putting more pressure on China, something that Trump has been calling for since he took over the office.

But, CMS, the US has increased direct defense spending in Europe by 3 times its expenditures since 2016-look at the European Deterrence Initiative. To highlight the point again: the Trump administration has INCREASED direct spending IN EUROPE. You can call it modest or whatever you want, but it is not a weakening of the US defense position in Europe, but a strengthening. So how can you say the facts bear witness to Trump not being committed to NATO? I get the general perception and how Trump has made some very bold challenges to NATO (but he's made it known that those challenges were to bolster NATO strength), but would you agree the facts challenge the perception of lack of commitment?
