can you explain to us why the US doesn't have a simple ID card that can be used for voting with?
After you peel back the far right insanity (also found in the UK on the issue of ID) you'll find it dates back to the founding philosophy of the country. Originally the individual states were to take care of almost their own business and the federal government was restricted to a few basic areas (common defense, adjudicating conflicts between states, things like that). That's also the idea behind the electoral college (states elect the president not individual citizens) and the separation of the two houses - The House of Representatives are to represent the voters in their district while Senators are supposed to represent their states as a whole (and why each state has just two senators).
That's also why to this day there's no such thing as a US driver's license or US birth certificate (or marriage license or general professional accreditation) those are all the states' business and states mostly don't want to give them up.
On the other hand for adults driver's licenses are de facto ID (and generally honored in other states for most things). For those who can't/don't drive the driver's license office (in many/most states) issues ID cards on the same model... (but identified as identification cards).
You can see the different codes here for Florida:

I remember losing my driver's license (misplaced, not as punishment) for a few weeks and tried to use my passport instead.... not an easy sell.
I do think there's no excuse for allowing people to vote without some form of valid ID but that's mostly a democratic issue. Now, republicans are more likely to want voters to show ID and democrats are against it.
My own position is that if you are so feckless/stupid/arrogant that you won't show ID to vote then I don't want you voting but democrats have been pushing for criminals* or undocumented migrants to be able to vote (for obvious reasons).
*traditionally being convicted of a felony was simultaneous with losing voting rights - democrats think it's awful that convicted criminals can't vote...
