The "overall" talking point does not work. Lets compare specific tariffs on specific items. EU tariffs on US cars 10%, US tariffs on EU cars before the tariff war began.

All auto tariffs should be equal as well. If any country doesnt want to have tariffs that are equal to each other then they lose the US market. And no one can afford to lose the US market. As for VAT, it is simply a business killer in the EU, and ZUS in Poland has killed many business before they even get started. Combine the two and then toss in the government making wage increases mandatory for political and arbitrary reasons and you will see new business development stop, or leave.
A trade inbalance cannot be sustained by the US. The generosity with taxpayer money to everyone but Americans is ending and should have ended a long time ago. This is common sense. I know its hard to take the lolipop from the child after he had had it for so long, but its time for that to happen and just let the child cry it out for a while.
