Although most words in Polish bear a penultimate (last but one) accent, there are numerous exceptions. There seems to be a tendency for the undereducated to assimilate words requiring an antepenultimate (two from last) accent to the penultimate mode. More and more one hears the bumpkinish mispronunciation poliTYka, ruBRYka, fiZYka, anglisTYka, faBUła, faBRYka, okoLIca, byLIŚmy, etc.
How do you react to this? Does such distorted pronunciation rub you the wrong way or don't you even hear it? Or maybe you yourself speak that way. Come on, fess up, if you do.
