That is true lyszko...the first European settlers like in Plymouth bay had similar theological beliefs to the Anglican church they were nonetheless seperate from that congregation... I believe they were called Brownists

Now that's interesting. I looked up the Brownists and it seemed that they first went to Holland and lived there for some years but became concerned because their children were coming under Dutch influence and losing their English cultural identity. Also apparently even back then they found Dutch society on the whole too 'libertine' for their conservative tastes.

By a strange coinicdence there's an obscure evangelicial Christian church called The Plymouth Brethren which was founded by a group of dissident Anglicans in Ireland of all places in the 1820s. The name has no connection with the Pilgrims though. There was a high profile series of grisly murders in England back in the 1940s, the 'acid bath murders' whose perpatrator was raised in the faith of the Plymouth Brethren! It was dramatised a few years back by English telly, A Is For Acid, great movie if you're interested.

I believe the immigration of brownists and other similar groups really picked up around the reign of Mary I of England aka Bloody Mary although I'm sure the Anglican monarchs would have saw them as a thorn in their side too for not recognizing that church's authority. Yes they did go to modern day holland, Germany and other parts of central Europe which was the epicenter of the Protestant Reformation. They surely would face less persecution in Holland or Germany than in England and their theological (and probably political too) beliefs would've been similar to that of Martin Luther. Also Holland was very wealthy at that time so they probably picked that originally for not only religious tolerance but also to live in a country with a similar level of development as England.

America was most likely a last resort for them. This was after all the new world and even the explorers and cartographers of the day knew next to nothing of these lands.
