Thanks Mr BW - I hadnt noticed how old it was - I just found it interesting to see how the West is such an influence on such life and death matters.

My apologies Shelley I didn't mean to sound flippant and aloof. I have now read through the link and its quite startling to say the least. But as the previous post to mine says it sates from 1994 and I wonder if the statistics have changed since.

If we speak about West and East as geographical terms then, OK. But, if we want to point on relations between civilizations we must refuse to accept clishe which is imposet on us.

In fact, Slavs represent last remain of old original native European population. Slavic world is true Western world. Currently- so called West, is in fact product of clash between ancient Slavic and Semitic civilizations in time BC and after.

So, if we were to discuss about West and East, let`s be precise. Slavic contribution to gobal civilization must be admited and honored. And, that final truth, doesn`t minimize contribution of others. Just, we all have our place in history. We have our rights and obligations, our mission

Somehow, I find the (old) revelations hard to believe. Well, so the Time hack describes the alleged health situation in 1994, presumably. What about today? Shouldn't we rather look at the health situation in the US, e.g. the dreaded public hospitals? Also, the look can be extended elsewhere, e.g. to some countries in Europe that used to be on the American side of the Iron Curtain, where e.g. patients die because nurses don't bother to wash hands....

The title of the posting alludes to Kipling's old poem where by 'East' he simply means Asia. So according to you, Shelleys, the countries mentioned in the article lie in Asia? :)

Time magazine, like practically 100 % of media in America, is a bunch of compulsive liars, producing crude political propaganda. And they have been negatively prejudiced towards Poland and Polish people for ages. I don't believe even one word of what these nasty psychopaths scribble.

Hm, today the Cold War propaganda dreadful and hateful images of Poland and other countries from 'the other' side of Iron Curtain - the images that the American and other hacks have been feeding their gullible audiences with for ages - are being shaken, due to the fact that people from America and elsewhere can come freely to these countries and see the reality there.

Is this why ShelleyS has brought in the old Time rubbish?

I graduated in 1993 and had my kids in 1991 and 1995. Somehow I did not see people dropping dead all around me. It was a time of general optimism and of a feeling that the sky's the limit. Dunno.

Poland was lucky,no one can deny that the situation was far different in places such as Romania ,Albania etc where complete collapse of those countries was only narrowly averted.

I don't think it's a good idea to compare such countries as Poland, Czechoslovakia, or Hungary with Romania or Albania - even when lumped together as Iron Curtain countries, their situation was vastly different.
It's like comparing pre-EU Portugal with West Germany.
And Russia is a whole different story altogether.
