President Duda handed out national awards "Krzyż Wielki Odrodzeni Polski". 22 people were awarded. Among them, archbishop Henryk Hoser. I think this is controversial.
The justification is enigmatic. "For accomplishments in priesthood" (duszpasterstwo). I personally don't believe national awards should be given for preaching, but whatever. It doesn't bother me that much. I have low expectations for president Duda.
What's worse, is that archbishop Henryk Hoser was a high ranking priest in Rwanda during times of the Tutsi/Hutu genocide. In Rwanda, they say he supported appointment of nationalist Hutu bishops. The Catholic Chuch in Rwanda favored Hutu. Everyone knew a massacre was coming, what were the shipments fo Chinese machettes for ?
Hoser has left Rwanda several months before the 1994 massacre, and returned just as it ended. Thousands of people were killed in Gikondo, where Hoser resided. Most of priests watched it passively, but a small number of them even participated. 70-80 people were slaughtered on the courtyard of the Polish church where Hoser was. Several days later, more than ten people were killed in the church's chapel.
Hoser is remarkably tight-lipped when it comes to the events in Rwanda. He refuses to give specific answers to any questions, including such as:
- why does the Church favor Hutu ?
- could the Church's attitude have supported genocide ?
- could the Church have done anything to prevent this ?
- what happened in 1994 in Gikondo ?
- what do you know about Vatican hiding the priests who participated actively ?
- why do you no longer travel to Rwanda ?

It really sounds like he was indirectly involved, and he knew what was coming. He refuses to talk about it. I think a person with such a dubious past shouldn't be awarded.
