I will make sure to deliver this message to them.
Tell them this from me. I'll try to say it seriously, for the Poles. Most of us don't fight in this war (except for some volunteers) but many support Ukrainians because in their present we see our past experience.
Poles also fought long and hard to be free of Russian dominance, corruption and terror. Our ancestors who participated in this fight were sometimes exiles or war refugees. After many lost battles we finally managed to win our independence in 1989 and were finally able to choose our destiny, this time without Kremlin's meddling. First years were difficult, the old world previously shaped by the Iron Curtain and the Cold War divide was collapsing around us, but looking back, we wouldn't make many different choices.
We believe every nation & nation state should have the right to choose its sovereign path. Today Russia is once again indulging in its imperial fantasy and trying to subjugate Ukrainians, and so we support their fight for what we can already enjoy: freedom to make our own choices. Which of course also means, making our own mistakes.
I'm sure that even victory in this war will not turn the life of Ukrainians into heaven on Earth. When initial euphoria ends, there will be many tough years ahead. The country will need to be rebuilt, many people will feel like their sacrifices have not been properly honored. In comparison, subjugation may seem a simpler, less painful path. And yet, if they choose to fight for the right to choose their own destiny, we feel they deserve our support.
