What happened was a shift in language policy:

Soviet times - people were allowed to speak Ukrainian on their own if they wanted but they had to be able to speak russian for some purposes

Ukraine's former language goal = people would be able to speak russian on their own if they wanted but they would have to be able to speak Ukrainian for some purposes

Very reasonable shift and despite some protests from the older more soviet-shaped generation it was slowly happening..... now it's speeded up and I hear of young people in Odesa (formerly heavily russian speaking) now switching on their own to Ukrainian...

I would say the russian state is the russian people's biggest enemy.... but I'm still here, so.... not yet.

But once NATO bases will be on their soil, that issues will arise immediately. So, finns and swedes should be prepared to further escalation.

A law about the language of education is not the same as a 'ban'. People would still be free to cultivate and use the language on their own.... there's no reason for the state to subsidize that.
