In 13 Weeks, Ukraine Has Lost Just Five Of Its 71 Leopard 2 Tanks

forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/08/28/in-13-weeks-ukraine-has-lost-just-five-of-its-71-leopard-2-tanks/?sh=393d3578185b

...The fundamental toughness of the 69-ton Leopard 2 means tanks might take damage, visit a repair depot, return to the fighting then again take damage and head out for repairs. So on and so forth. The Leopard 2 lends itself to recycling.

More importantly, it's possible almost every crew member in the five destroyed tanks-20 people in all-escaped their vehicle before it burned or exploded....

Ukraine is using its advanced Leopard tanks as a 'nocturnal predator' fighting mostly at night and at dawn, soldier says

businessinsider.com/ukraine-using-advanced-leopard-tanks-as-nocturnal-predator-soldier-says-2023-9

Ukrainian troops praised the advanced Leopard 2A6 tank's night vision as an advantage over Russia.

One said they use the tank as a "nocturnal predator," operating mostly at night and dawn.

Another said the long-range night vision gives them a "close to a 100% success rate."

...our Leos! :)

I guess we all have to grasp at straws don't we?, also the German Iris-T has proven itself in the real world too, plenty of orders coming in.

German arms maker Diehl to ramp up production of IRIS-T air defence system

reuters.com/markets/europe/german-arms-maker-diehl-ramp-up-production-iris-t-air-defence-system-2023-09-05/

...Buschek said Ukraine had shot down more than 110 targets, most of these cruise missiles such as the Kalibr, with a hit rate of almost 100%.

The system successfully countered an attack on Kyiv by a swarm of 13 Russian cruise missiles at the start of the year, intercepting all missiles, Buschek said....

Indeed. Especially after the very nice show from Storm Shadow missiles last night.

The r*SSians are seething. What a humiliation for them!

The r*SSians are seething

The Russians recognize that this, like the drone attacks on Moscow, the special forces raids on Crimea and offshore platforms, incursions into Belgorod, and other such things - are all attempts by the Zelensky government to somehow give a more cheerful color to what has been a disastrous counter-offensive campaign. American military officials have privately expressed their displeasure with this waste of limited long range strike assets on non-essential targets.

this alliance

It's good for both your country's and my country's industrial bases, at a time when the rise of China is a threat.

I was surprised to read that the U.K. aerospace/defence sector is the second largest in the world after the US. Even bigger than China or France. And of course the order books for German factories are filling up too because of the IRIS-T.

r*SSia though, are reduced to begging North Korea for rusty old 1960s rifles. They will however receive plenty of missiles from the free world.

Receive them that is, aimed at them and exploding.

Disagree with that Bobko - there is a huge value in showing the Udmurtians that their government is incapable of defending its borders and airspace. That wil l give them something to think about, apart from where their next drink is coming from.

disastrous counter-offensive campaign

The same counter offensive that's made slow but steady progress and last night moved just that bit further towards Melitoplol.

American military officials have privately

A standard orc deflection line, whenever r*SSia suffers losses (and they suffer a lot of losses).

there is a huge value in showing the Udmurtians that their government is incapable of defending its borders and airspace

Of course. And the long range weapons are only now slowly coming into operation. r*SSia meanwhile is begging from Fat Kim, buying weapons that normal only the third world have to resort to.

Seeing how well Ukraine can do with heavy weaponry like this just helps to remind the free world how important it is to give them the tools they need to finish the job.

More specifically their government is completely uninterested in protecting them.... russia doesn't care how many russians get killed (or how) as long as they think they can make the world 'respect' (ie 'fear') them.... a primitive goal but it's a primitive culture... so....

I can't help but think the Sevastopol attack wasn't at least a gian "F--k you!" to Elon Musk who's antics have been in the news recently, showing him that yes... yet another 'red line' crossed another 'escalation' and russia can't do anything about it beyond random attacks on civilians....

Russians are not idiots. They understand that no government in the world is capable of defending against miniaturized drones, or cruise missiles with stealth aspects, to a 100% rate. At least, not those that haven't been blessed with two oceans on either side, and Mexico and Canada as neighbors.

This isn't interpreted as some total indictment of Putin's incompetence as hopeful NATO cheerleaders might want.

What it is good for, potentially, is driving the message home to the comfortable denizens of places like St. Petersburg and Moscow that we are under attack.

Russians are not idiots.

Thats where you have been misled, oh yes they are.

They understand that no government in the world

A good ruski does not understand or care what the government can or cannot do, and a good ruski government does not care in the slightest about what the citizen understands.

@Bobko
With all due respect, they took out a submarine and another ship by some reports. Thats not a meaningless attack, thats a very successful mission. While I agree the Ukraine propaganda machine is just as twisted as the Russian machine, Putins position asking NK for weapons says a lot. 16 months is a long time.

I can't help but think the Sevastopol attack wasn't at least a gian "F--k you!" to Elon Musk who's

Perhaps partly to send a message to that cretin Musk, partly a show for Rocket Man and partly a reminder of what Ukraine can do if they're properly supplied.

And that r*SSia can't significantly escalate without devastating consequences for them.

or cruise missiles with stealth aspects

Worth remembering that Putler knows very well that he can be hit by missiles fired from anywhere in the world, ones that he can't defend against and ones that he can't find or prevent.

Why Australia is Gladly Preparing for War

But Udmurtia has a big population of idiots - gullible drunk losers who probably used to believe the crap about then having the worlds second best army

And of course regular rich countries would havff egg much better air defenses - created and manned by sober experts instead of slumbering alkies who manages to pay the few kopecks to stay away from the front

Speaking of which, when are you guys joining up ?

slumbering alkies who manages to pay the few kopecks to stay away from the front

Hardly surprising given that they inevitably turn into charred remains.

27 orcs were killed by their own side and 34 badly maimed including losing arms and legs while fleeing from a Ukrainian advance yesterday. Their own side attacked them with drones. Ukraine only expected to take a small area of land however the carnage was so great that they just stepped over the bodies for a kilometre.

And the orcs stalled despite sending 50,000 troops to retake Kupyansk. They have entirely failed in this with huge casualties.

Fighting words!

Literally quaking in my boots, as I type this message.

May I direct you to the advice of Ukraine's foreign minister - Kuleba?

"I would recommend all critics to shut up, come to Ukraine and try to liberate one square centimetre by themselves," Kuleba said, standing alongside Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.

I know he had meant critics, but I feel it equally applies to righteous Westerners such as yourself that feel the Ukrainians are fighting drunk amateurs. If you manage to liberate "one square centimeter", without having your brains blown out all over the Ukrainian chernozem, I will close my account on PF.

stupid words, if Russian are such bad fighers and soldiers, that put all those who lost to them in a very bad light.
Only those who never been in real fight can talk like that... or those who are scared sh..tlesss.
I understand venting but that goes beyong it. that war goes on long enough for people top get real.
It won't be easy to kick your Russian asess from Ukrainie.
It has to be done..

Well Zeihan has noted that russia has never won a war though briliant strategy or cutting edge technology.... they just throw dead bodies at the enemy until they're overcome.... even by WWII that was a dodge policy and now it's downright suicidal given the low fertility and how many breeding age young men have been killed or have simply left russia

mafketis
13 Sep 2023  #1980

Zeihan must be an idiot...

He's actually a bit sympathetic to russian security concerns but he's a rationalist and assumes that the invasion was always going to happen since it was about existential russian fear of invasion and about possible routes to invade russia (the Bessarabian gap and the Polish gap) in this view russia doesn't care about most of Ukraine it's just between it and the gaps it wants to seal.... and if it's ever successful it's going to try to take the Baltics again for the same reason....

He doesn't get the imperial ideological reasons at all...
