@Barney, Nazi Germany was sovereign too when it was sending people to concentration camps.

Paulina

@Barney, what on Earth are you talking about?

Atch
22 Sep 2023  #2346

"Oh look! There's a rabbit!" something you might say to distract somebody. He's saying it's the equivalent of that. Does that help?

Paulina
22 Sep 2023  #2347

@Atch, thanks, I understand that he was talking about distraction, but I'd like him to elaborate on this, because I'm not sure what point he's trying to make with that short and vague comment...

.....things get rolling:

....
According to intelligence reports, the Ukrainian army has destroyed a command post of the Russian armed forces in the occupied city of Melitopol.

There was a cyber attack and a missile attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol in Crimea.

US media: ATACMS missiles could soon be delivered to Ukraine

.....
6:08 p.m.: According to consistent US media reports, the USA could soon provide Ukraine with longer-range ATACMS missiles. The US government will soon provide the weapons system requested by Kiev to defend itself in Russia's war of aggression, the Washington Post and US broadcaster NBC News reported on Friday, citing several sources familiar with the matter. According to the Washington Post, it is an ATACMS variant that can be equipped with cluster munitions. NBC News reported that US President Joe Biden had already promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the provision of "a small number" of ATACMS during his visit to Washington on Thursday....

"Longer range" being the subtle hint which could become important for the german decision about the TAURUS missiles for Ukraine. Till now Scholz balked and harrumpfed and shuffled his feet about them because with those missiles Ukraine could attack russian territory...even Moscow itself....that would be a game changer !

But now...when the US are starting to give "longer range" missiles to Ukraine....

Still playing with noisy toys, children?

Now a reality check...

There is no Santa.
Russia will keep C, D, and L no matter what.
Ukrainian migrants are not going home.
Ukraine will not join NATO. If it tries, Russia and Poland will share a common border very quickly.

Cookies are in the back of the room. One per child!

... the Ukrainian army has destroyed a command post of the Russian armed forces in the occupied city of Melitopol.

Feel-good noise that means squat...
Is Syria occupied by the US armed forces or are those Syrians wearing American uniforms?

Just for info:

Why Ukraine wants Germany's Taurus missile

dw.com/en/why-ukraine-wants-germanys-taurus-missile/a-66505534

....This long-range missile flies at an altitude of only 35 meters, which makes it almost impossible for radar systems to detect.

Taurus uses four independent navigation systems to stay on course. The satellite-supported GPS system is shielded against attempts to jam it. With what is known as terrain referenced navigation, Taurus scans the ground and compares the images with previously stored data.

Taurus is used against what the German Air Force refers to as "high-value targets," which would include bunkers or command posts from which enemy troops control operations. The missile is able to penetrate several reinforced concrete walls. When it reaches its target, the missile climbs steeply and then hits from above in a vertical nosedive.

Before the actual warhead explodes, a charge blasts through the bunker's outer walls. This metal penetrator, weighing 400 kilograms (880 pounds), uses sensors to measure how much resistance it has to overcome. Taurus can penetrate several floors of a bunker before the actual warhead explodes.....

A Taurus could find Putin deep in his bunker in Moscow....

Of course:

...The Bundeswehr's Taurus are designed to be used with Tornado or Eurofighter jets, and the missile, which was developed by the European missile company MBDA, would first have to be adapted to the fighter jets used by Ukraine's Air Force....

Vučić: I will speak the facts and the truth before the UN; "They won't like it"

President of Serbia delivered a historic speech at the UN yesterday, he spoke bravely and sincerely in calling out obvious double standards and Western hipocrisy.

"I want to tell president Zelensky to never again insult Poles like he did recently in his UN speech."

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian press is largely supportive of Zelensky. Zelensky himself, made a statement yesterday, the bottom line of which was essentially: "We tried to act within the sphere of laws, while the Poles decided to turn it into political theater."

Here's Ukrainian coverage of statements made by Zbigniew Rau, where he called Ukraine's policies "damaging and insulting" and also said that it would require "titanic" efforts to restore Polish trust towards Ukraine. Unfortunately, I don't see any comments there. Perhaps pravda.ua hides comments from Polish IP users for fear of damaging our weak nerves xD

I browsed some comments to minister Rau's tweet though - is it just me or is order being slowly restored to the universe? :)

Say what?

Your hoped for draw means more and more Ukrainian civilians killed... the safety of Ukrainian civilians is my main priority (and surrender or any kind of russian victory means more civilian deaths no less).

And Ukrainian victory is far better for Poland than a russian one or a draw.... your weird fixation about 'turbo' aside.

Here's the ever-charming vicious harpy and censorship vvhore Simonyan on today's attack on Sevastopol...

Your hoped for draw means more and more Ukrainian civilians killed...

Quite the contrary. Quick ending of hostilities, after 18 months of hard-fought draw, would stop civilian casualties. The lives of Ukrainian women and children are way more important than either side's military victory.

Nicholas Sarkozy was basically right: stop the killing, conduct internationally supervised referenda, and end this senseless war.

People who want to continue this war ad infinitum or until Russian or Ukrainian victory (which means much longer) should reconsider their inhumane and bloodthirsty position.

22 Sep 2023  #2361

....do you think Putin will order his troops back?

GefreiterKania
22 Sep 2023  #2362

Why not?

If a peace is negotiated (the only sensible thing to do in case of a draw and neither side having any chances of quick military victory in sight), internationally supervised referenda conducted and their outcome accepted by international community* then finally the world will breathe a sigh of relief and civilian casualties will stop. Simple as that.

* - and international community should have no problem with that, as they had no problem with Kosovo deciding their own future

Bratwurst Boy
22 Sep 2023  #2363

and neither side having any chances of quick military victory in sight

THAT's the thing....can Putin go out of this without being able to present a win? Nothing at all? His sympathy points will tank....his people wants a strong, successful leader, not a loser!

attempts by Germany and Ukraine to allow the import of Ukrainian grain into Poland to incite Polish farmers against PiS and, in effect, cause PiS's electoral defeat.

Doesn`t hold water, really. It was quite predictable that the Polish gov would stick to their resolution and block the free import. Now PIS are lashing at Ukraine and its politicians and in result are gaining new voters, the ones who earlier intended to vote for anti Ukrainian Konfederacja.

It is impossible that Germans would prove so stupid as to fuel more support for PIS . :)::):):

@Paulina
Apologies, I am and have been very busy lately.

Velund made a point about the so called international rules based order which was broken by the NATO led dismemberment of Serbia. Replying with "the Nazis" is nothing more than a distraction from the clear hypocritical stance most Nato countries and other cheerleaders have taken with regards to this rules based order. I gave a few examples of this hypocrisy.

The events in Ukraine since 2013 demonstrate this. I recall posting at the time about Russian support for people who used to vote for the party of the regions and pointing out that Russia did exactly what so called western nations did and do...they protect their interests. The Ukrainian economy and society was intertwined with Russia, breaking those ties was incredibly stupid for Ukraine. There is no way that Ukraine will be allowed to join the EU as the impact on the agricultural sector for example would be destabilising and devastating. The political cost due to the new migrant labour to the core countries would also be politically unacceptable as can now be seen with brexit.

The destruction of the political party that most Ukrainian people voted for was a deeply undemocratic and criminal enterprise. You can vote for anyone you like so long as we approve of them.

GefreiterKania
22 Sep 2023  #2366

Nothing at all?

I'd hazard a guess that most of the referenda Sarkozy mentioned would end up in favour of Russia (certainly in C, D and L), so Putin would have something to show and might even claim a limited victory.

Bratwurst Boy
22 Sep 2023  #2367

That's what I had in mind too....Putin would want to keep his troops there....for the "safety" of his Russians....in reality an occupying power...that way this war would never truly end....

GefreiterKania
22 Sep 2023  #2368

that way this war would never truly end

Why not? The lands where people voted for Ukraine would stay in Ukraine, and those where people voted for Russia would be incorporated into Russia. A rather democratic solution, isn't it? People must be able to decide their own future - Kosovo style. That would end the war, Putin could claim limited victory, Ukraine would be able to start applying for EU membership and rebuild their country, and civilian casualties would stop. I fail to see the dowsides of such solution.

Bratwurst Boy
22 Sep 2023  #2369

So...Russia won! It gained territory which was ukrainian before...

See what I mean? Is there a way out of it with BOTH happy? Surely not with ethnic enclaves...the next conflict is only a matter of time!

There is this other conflict right now....Aserbaidshan/Armenia...in Berg-Karabach....the minority there has fighted along time, now they still lost....now they have the choice to leave or to assimilate!

Barney
22 Sep 2023  #2370

@GefreiterKania
I think its too late for referenda.

@Bratwurst Boy
Russian troops will definitely stay.

I can't see how this war will end and relations rebuilt. A negotiated stalemate will probably happen but Ukrainian relations with its neighbours won't recover any time soon.
