Pretty scandalous news out of Ukraine. The SBU (state intelligence agency) has detained two Ukrainians on charges of spying for Hungary.

The news is a few hours old. No response from Orban yet.

This is nuts. A few months ago when I was speculating about Hungarian irredentism, I didn't think they were contemplating actual military operations.

Slovakia, Romania, and Poland have considerably larger claims on Ukrainian territory. Wonder how they feel about this.

Romania would roll into Hungary from the East, Croatia from the South, and if he thinks Slovakia would shield him from Poland in the North, he has to think again. No. Definitely not. He can't be that retarded.

In all honesty, I think Hungary's army would be obliterated by Ukraine's - even if it remained largely committed to the East.

Maybe if Kiev has fallen, and there is no organized resistance left - Orban can exploit the general confusion to quickly grab some Hungarian majority areas (to protect them, of course).

I imagine they'll say something then, like this:

Why have your senior military leadership give speeches to the rank and file about shifting away from a "peace stance"?

Why recruit ethnic Hungarian spies in Ukraine, to gauge the sentiments of the local population regarding a potential invasion?

Orban won the last elections most convincingly. As he said - his victory was "so big", that you could see it "from the moon". He doens't need to play any "war cards" to mobilize the electorate. He is secure in his current position, for at least a few more years.

I think it would be a mistake to dismiss this as some kind of Hungarian theatrics. These people are known for making suicidal decisions, and they almost always end disastrously for them. It hasn't stopped them in the past from making new attempts.

His government has justified it's pro-russian stance by supposed Ukrainian oppression of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia (and was singularly unmoved when they wrote an open letter to him telling him to knock it off and to support Ukraine). When they complain about a lack of Hungarian language education in Ukraine what they mean is they're not in charge of it...
