Whenever I read in the news that a British (or French, Dutch etc.) man committed a violent crime, it is almost certain that his first name was Mustafa or Muhhamad and he was as British as hummus. Usually, this small detail about his ethnicity is not revealed or at least you have to dig for it on the last page.

My own view is that the Azan nowadays can be done direct (and quietly) to someone's smartphone and doesn't suit or need loudspeakers anyway. As a voice thing, it is beautiful but from a minaret should be reserved for special occasions (religious holidays) in places where there's a tradition of it or where there's a large community who'll appreciate it, and not outside working hours.

Much the same with church bells; a complex 400 year old peal of 10 bells at a cathedral or in a prosperous village church is wonderful (though not too late in the evening) however loudspeaker tape recordings of bells, low quality bells and loud peals for churches which have 6 weddings every Saturday etc should not happen in residentIal areas.

Azans (they only last 90 seconds) from a minaret are fine for special occasions, as are bells if they are muffled and also only short peals..

Several years ago on vacation in the Bodrum area of Turkey the hotel I was staying at was within hearing distance of a place where people seemed to be training for/practicing doing the call to prayer... hearing the off-key voice-cracking practice calls was kind of amusing. Even at the mid-day prayers on Friday (even close to a mosque) the great majority of people seemed to ignore them (and a mosque on the sea walk had maybe a half dozen people in it at noon Friday).... But most people in Bodrum are culturally closer to Italians or Greeks in lots of ways (despite the latter being violently expelled a few decades ago). It's probably different in the less educated Erdogan heartland...

The broader issue is cultural compatibility as church bells have hundreds of years of tradition behind them (and thus serve as a symbol of cultural continuity) while calls to prayer in most of Europe.... don't and rather represent cultural rupture and discontinuation. For fans of cultural wreckage the short term benefits might seem to be worth it, but it's probably worth looking at the social dysfunction of much of the muslim world before enthusiastically embracing their cultural practices.

I used to live for 3 years (not long ago) right opposite a Qadiriyah mosque (an exotic Sufi sect in Africa) and used to listen to them chanting for hours at a time. It was a tradition there and Qadiriyah are a very special group though, almost an endangered species nowadays. In (Eastern Region) Saudi, the loudspeakers (especially at night) used to annoy me, as did the crapper singers doing it. In Turkey and the Hejaz though, it's an old tradition and generally more low key than in some places.


It depends where and the context. Great in a village, not so great in a modern suburb.

I am neither btw, let alone a marxist. I did however live in a city quarter where many migrants from the ME lived, with the main street being presominantly occuppied by migrant shop owners and my experience was mostly positive. Particulary the people running a small restaurant were incredibly welcoming and friendly to a degree I rarely experienced before. We talked a lot and I made a few good friends there.
