I think it depends on cultural exposure and personal encounter. Western Germans rarely meat them in person and never watched Russian movies/TV programs. Therefore they used to believe that all people from the East are the aliens from the movie "Alien".

Naw, we don't hold anything against Russians themselves, their depiction in West German media was usually sympathic than e.g. Hollywood films. It is just that we have a more critical and less romanticized view Russia, seeing it as the corrupt state run by oligarchs with a revisionist agenda that it is.
