I was going to say that I don't know anyone calling for a return to Stalinism or state capitalism or whatever name is applied but I remembered a group I know in East Tyrone that want to start the global revolution but properly this time. They are all good guys.

Generally socialist politics is the most successful system for lifting people out of poverty, reducing inequality and improving longevity. Unbridled capitalism is good at creating fabulously rich individuals but not much else. Innovation tends to be driven and funded by state need.

It has always been so, without state intervention through taxation or regulation philanthropy is the only way to redistribute wealth. From feudal times on the system that was supposed to work didn't. "lords" didnt play their part in the system they benefitted from. There have always been honourable individuals but they are a rarity which is why we need government intervention.

To return to the point about the mendacious attack on the BBC it's difficult to think of an area more important than press ownership that needs government intervention.
