On the other side I read somewhere that Floyd was a drug user and could have died because of resulting heart failure...
I haven't heard it, but then again I haven't been following it closely. These always devolve into the same narrative: cops are racists who only kill black males, whites who don't think only blacks are killed or mistreated by police are racists, America is nothing but one big institution of racism. It's baloney.
But, whether or not Floyd was a drug user is immaterial. The cop applied direct body pressure to Floyd's neck after Floyd was cuffed and not resisting for a long period of time. Most of the time these incidents happen, the cop is justified in the use of force. This time, we got enough facts (8 mins of video), and I do not see how the cop is justified. His arrest and charge are justified.
I've heard that American police are very poorly trained compared to U.K. police,
Not true. Most American police are well trained and undergo constant training throughout their careers. The cop acting badly isn't due to training, it's because the cop was bad (at least, to some degree).
I know way too many cops, and what's interesting is how many of them b1tch mostly about the same handful of co-workers. They want the problem cops gone--but, the labor laws don't make it easy to get rid of them.
