I know the whole procedure very well, because unlike you in your ignorance, I talked to the cops here and layers and know exactly what to do and what to say.

That is why shooting a gun is the VERY last thing one should do with the only other alternative being dead. On top of that bit of wisdom, you should make sure that the evidence is unmistakably on your side. This typically means two broken doors: to the house and to the saferoom - saferoom typically being your master bedroom.

Optionally, a video of the last scene in the saferoom would help a lot. A simple always-on app on the smartphone takes care of that.
