being kind to us, we treat it with suspicion

Exactly! Like that stranger female who smiled to me in the street once and I wasn`t sure it she wanted to borrow 5 zlotys or have sex with me or she was just crazy.

So, when Bobko sounds nice to us, I immediately recall that lady.
Bobko, which was your intention out of three? 5 zlotys, sex or madness???

I still kinda like Russia in general

You will stop liking it when you meet and talk to a Russian general who commands troops in Ukraine. Did you forget the immortal words of Mickiewicz from Reduta Ordona poem??

Where is the king, who sends those crowds to be slaughtered?
Is he sharing their courage, is he putting his own life on the line?
No, he sits five hundred miles away on his capital...
Great king, the only ruler of the half of the world;
He frowned, - and thousand of kibitkas instantly goes;
He signed, - thousand of mothers mourns their children;
He nodded, - the knouts falls from Neman to Chiwa.
Oh mighty one, strong as the God, malignant as the Satan,
When your bronze [canonns] scares the Turks,
When the Paris legation licks your feet,
Only Warsaw is not afraid of your power,
Raises its hand on you and pulls the crown,

Crown od Casimirs, Chrobrys off your head,
For thou have stolen and covered it in blood
you Wasiliew's son!

still possesses some sort of poetic attraction to me. Oh, well... maybe it will pass

Never mind. People can be hooked on different stuff. Some are on drugs, others on alcohol, still others on sex or gambling. Being hooked on Russia is the same - certainly not better or worse.

I was trying to be kind to Poland.

By talking how good it was when Poland had been under tzars boots? In Poland we have completely different traditions. 300 years of constitutional monarchy with strong parliament instead of tsar's autocracy. Even our interwar authoritarianism was much softer (and not genocidal) than the Soviet rule.

Bobko, which was your intention

To stroke your injured Polish ego; to tame - if for a moment - the savageness of your nature; to make a little more gentle the life of this world... with a kind word)

EDIT: Random question for all, which I have somehow not asked in all these years. Dear Poles, what nation in the world, has the deepest appreciation for what it means to be Polish? Do you think it's your neighbors, the Lithuanians or Slovaks? Is it the Czechs or Germans? Could it be that us Russians, actually are the most interested in you?

Bobko

Then they sit down and write poetry about this destruction

I have to admit, this was pretty funny. I will have to steal this from you, and add it to my collection.

Jesus Christ! Guys, ruuuuun for your lives!!! Russians are interested in us again. FEKKKK !!!! Where is that rusty Panzerfaust I received as inheritance from my grandpa??? Wifey, where did you put it??? I always told you I need it under my pillow! Luckily, I have three. One Panzerfaust on each floor of the house is a must. Like in America! Ha!

Never stopped loving you, darling.

the Lithuanians

Difficult to say what is a Lithuanian these days. The country called Lithuania is currently inhabited mostly by Samogitians (and their love for Poland is somewhat limited, to put it mildly) whilst the real Lithuanians call themselves Belarussians these days and have closer ties with Russia. European history... a complicated thing.

Slovaks?

Hmm... complicated again; Poles are usually pro-Hungarian and another name for Slovakia is Upper Hungary, and they stole Janosik (or was it us stealing him from them? I can't remember) and they attacked us in 1939. No, Slovakia, wouldn't be my bet.

Czechs

Q: Why didn't the Czechs have underground state and underground army in WW2? A: Because Germans said it wasn't allowed. ;) If you think of two Slavic nations that are its exact opposites that would have to be Poles and Czechs. Nope, it's not the Czechs.

Among nations that usually declare their appreciation of Poland we could name: Hungarians, Georgians, Turks, Romanians, Greeks, Germans are improving in this regard too, Serbs are generally very friendly, but are they really interested in us? I shall express my ignorance and indifference by saying: "I don't know and I don't care". :)

Never stopped loving you, darling.

Wait a minute... what was it you told us that happens to the things that Russia really loves with the full bandwith of her love? Oh, sh*t...

@GefreiterKania

So you have arrived at the only correct conclusion. The only place where Mickiewicz and Lem are known by the popular masses, outside of Poland, is Russia.

Pretty much the only place in the world, where people still remember and discuss a Poland which was a world heavyweight is... Russia.

The only people in the world that can approach any level of understanding of that mix of melancholy, heroism, and fatalism that creates Polishness, are... Russians.

What do you make of it?

Probably one of those many Russian contradictions that cannot be encompassed by reason, understood without vodka etc. They are present in your general culture so it's only logical that they're present also in the language.

yeah, stop romanticizing that crap... it's the contradictions that drive them to invade other countries "we may live like animals in a garbage dump but we can invade.... that makes us a great power!"

Good! You can land straight on johnny`s yacht which is so big it has the landing area. You will finally meet, shake hands and drink Polish vodka to make up all your silly arguments.

It is really embarassing to read how mature people of the same political and ideolo agenda quarrel. Get it straight coz you both sound pathetic when you argue, to the great detriment of your cause! Ha! Remember, you have to be united to fight evil leftists!!!!! You must be like a bunch of arrows!! Then you will be unbreakable!! If you are separate arrows, leftists will break you like matchsticks. Didn`t you watch those famous films about Winnetou???

The loss of most of them wasn`t fatalism but just bad luck.

I think I can be forgiven then, for making the mistake I made. It's difficult, for an outside observer, to understand where Polish incorrigible enthusiasm ends and where fatalism begins.

pawian

where Polish incorrigible enthusiasm ends and where fatalism begins.

Enthusiasm ends after each lost Rising but then it rises again to lead to another Rising. Isn`t it obvious and simple????

Miloslaw
31 Jan 2023  #3411

I think I can be forgiven then

Sorry.
But at this point in time Russians cannot be forgiven for ANYTHING!!

Your dictator started this, now the rest of you will have to suffer until you get rid of him.
And yes, that is the only solution.
Only Russians can truly decide their own fate.

But the crimes committed in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan by Western "democracies" can be?

Novichok
31 Jan 2023  #3413

Russians are brainwashed ,ignorant vassels of a gangster state.

You just insulted your own intelligence. My best advice: don't do it. Just because you don't like them does not make them what you claim.

I am absolutely sure that many Americans would rather live in Moscow or St. Petersburg than in DC or Baltimore.

But the crimes committed in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan by Western "democracies" can be?

Although Western Democracies did help in some of those wars, please substitute
"Western Democracies" with "America" and there is your problem in a nutshell....
But you already knew that, didn't you?

Novichok
31 Jan 2023  #3416

But you already knew that, didn't you?

Of course, I did. However, the US was not alone and those who joined - like the UK and Poland in Iraq - are just as guilty since they couldn't even claim they were acting in self-defense.

Miloslaw
31 Jan 2023  #3417

the UK and Poland in Iraq - are just as guilty since they couldn't even claim they were acting in self-defense.

And neither could the USA.
The fact is you vastly underestimate the power and influence the USA has over the smaller and weaker nations.
Don't blame the weak followers.
Blame the chief culprit.

Novichok
31 Jan 2023  #3418

Don't blame the weak followers.

I will blame the weak followers because there were so many of them. The worst the US could have done was refuse foreign aid to those who refused to join in the bombing and killing.

When left alone and without the cloak of coalitions, the American swamp would have very possibly given up.

Miloslaw
31 Jan 2023  #3419

I will blame the weak followers because there were so many of them.

Well, firstly, there were not so many of them.
But secondly and more importantly you overestimate the importance of the weak followers and completely underestimate the power of the USA!
Stop shifting the blame.....these were American wars, started by America and supported by your little friends......end of story....

Novichok
31 Jan 2023  #3420

But secondly and more importantly you overestimate the importance of the weak followers

They were important enough as window-dressing material for the US to twist arms will over the world to create that bs coalition in Iraq:

.. a list of 31 countries that participated in the US-led coalition: Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Kuwait, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Palau, Portugal, Rwanda, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Uganda, Panama, Angola, Tonga, and Ukraine. Total - 49

It's beyond embarrassing that a superpower would ever need Palau to defend itself from an "evil" guy who "might" be thinking about making his own WMDs. And, you, Brits fell for this crap.

BTW, most of these clowns did guard duty and needed the US military to protect THEM!!! Hahahahahahaha...
