Flann O'Brien was never what you'd call famous though he was well known in his lifetime. He worked in a government office for many years. But you'll be pleased to know he drank himself to death. My mother liked him, thought he was a great 'character' as we'd say in Ireland. She was studying in the College of Music in Dublin and at that time all the students and staff from the College of Music hung out in the Bailey Inn in Duke Street and Flann would be there. He had a very dry wit. He was a satirist really.

It was actually an English friend of mine who lent me 'The Third Policeman' when I was a mere flibbertygibbet of twenty :) It's interesting how the humour seems to travel well despite the Irishness of O'Brien's work.
