May I reword it as "soft power"?

I can imagine for the life of me chinese movies, chinese music, chinese clothing being sought after by european teens....seriously not!

English is the world lingua #1 not for nothing but for their closeness to the european tongues...something China will NEVER achieve, no matter what else they might achieve!

Oh I'm not talking generally asian here....I for one adore Japan myself, till to the point wanting to try to learn Kanjis, not to mention all things Anime....but China is something else totally.

And even so, that has always been a niche-hobby....with a relatively small fan circle....just watch the music charts, how many korean or japanese groups are there present?

Again, I think you may be showing your age, but K-POP bands are the most popular in the world right now, and Netflix is full of Korean dramas and movies.

....I may be not a teen anymore (heh:)....and I can only speak for Germany, but here there are no K-Pop bands in the charts and no Korean movie is talked about...I couldn't even name one korean actor....only those asian actors who made it in Hollywood!

You have to be a fan to know one from the other anyhow....again, I don't talk about South Korea or Japan, but China! You need alot more soft power to be truly a global power comparable to the US, something China doesn't have and never will have!

You seem, through some of your responses, to be rather young (maybe mine and Kania's age). In other things you say, I feel you were born maybe in the 50s or 60s.

I am 33 (almost 34, ha!).

I was old enough to be pressed into the GDR youth organization, the FDJ....*sighs*

Otherwise I feel alot younger so I don't know myself....that must be enough! :)

My older brother and cousins were also Pioneers and Oktyabryata (don't know if you had this in GDR. But basically scouts for the very youngest kids). I didn't get to do any of that. When everything was collapsing I was only two years old.

I always felt envious of those that got to do the Soviet stuff before it all disappeared forever. Everyone had only the kindest memories of what they did in those youth organizations.

For us, in independent RU, it was trash from beginning to end.

Yeah....I had been a Pionier too....it was for the kids before they grew old enough for the FDJ....it was that way everywhere in the Eastern Bloc, all modeled on the Sovietunion. That's why we also learned Russian in school from the 5th grade onwards....but without usage you are bound to forget, sadly.....

I realize that mine is a minority voice here, but even now from the perspective of time, I am grateful to the Soviet army for being in Poland when I was there.

Today, after K, V, I, and A, I can easily imagine how some a-holes in DC could decide to give Poland "freedom and democracy" and turn Poland into killing fields - again.

Those 300,000 Soviets in Legnica served so well as a chill pill up Western a-holes' butts. Thanks, guys.
