It's an eclectic city; only a small place before the garment industry and a few other things. If he's looking for large Muslim populations (or if 'several friends' to,d him something) there are plenty of other places. None of them enclaves and none of them 'no go areas'.
Leeds, incidentally, has around 120,000 full time students and is generally considered a nice place to live.

They would be a surprise to York's 9 million annual visitors, 1.3 million of them from overseas. It's a major tourist destination.
