It's about attention span. Apparently attention spans are shrinking especially among millenials and younger due to internet use.

Booze and other intoxicants probably don't help with concentration either, however the main issue is shorter engagement with texts and the proliferation of short clips.

Substance use is a better term.

It would be a good guess though a lot would depend on the substance in question, ethanol products, chemicals, beneficial herbs like Mary Jane or Coca or wonderful mushrooms or perhaps lot of espresso or jelly babies.
