Russia claims the North Pole

Nathan
9 Aug 2010  #1

What do you think about this outrageous move by Russian governement against all international agreements regarding the Artic ocean and its shelf? Does the history repeat itself and the world will be held hostage to the expansionist politics of this economically backward monger who has no gas for the planes to extinguish fire near its own capital while trying to capture more land and more gas destroying not only the ecosystem, but also provoking the international conflict of the huge proportions?

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-464921/Putins-Arctic-invasion-Russia-lays-claim-North-Pole--gas-oil-diamonds.html

In addition to that Russians violate Canadian airspace by flying the bombers and jet-planes, with obvious intentions of attempted intimidation and provocation, which seemed to be directly linked to the ridiculous claims of the North Pole and the Arctic shelf.

Well, can Poland gain something?

In the first article it talks about how Putin is making claims on most of the North Pole "to make Russia stronger"

For Gods sake Russia's land mass as it is dwarfs virtually every nation. How big of a Russian nationalist egomaniac can he be? Its like the Russians aren't happy unless they control half of the world's land mass or more. I don't get this crazy nationalism.

Just another chance to deny Poles from access to Russian Gas ( should it come to pass....)?

Exactly. But it is not Putin himself. It is Russian foreign policy since the XVll century when they came to exist as Russia. This country can't function economically by simple improving 1/9th of the world's landmass it came to possess. It has to be always threatening the neighbours to prove its point since otherwise it is unable to compete with the rest of the developed world. Russia still possesses illegally occupied Kuril islands of Japan, a tiny country which until recently was the 2nd largest economy of the world.

What it has to do with Poland?

Read the two articles and you will understand.

LOL

I just don't get it.

Russia has more land than God. You would think a nation with possession of this huge land mass and its resources would be content with it. Instead it acts like its a tiny nation that is desperate for territory.

That wiki article is one of many where Russia is scrapping for every square inch of territory it can get its hands on. Then it feels the need to seize all the land of the vast North Pole. I just don't get this hyper nationalist egomaniacal need for glitz and glory. Its like a guy who is a giant Hulk (3 times as big as everyone else) telling the world he wants to get even bigger and stronger to impress everyone. Talk about some kind of inferiority complex.

I heard that Russian leaders said not long ago that "Ukraine is not really a country". In other words they felt it was still Russian property, as if Russia does not have enough of its own land.

Is this true they said this about Ukraine? That's sad if true :(

once under russian control, they will always lay claim to it.. a lesson for poland to keep in mind.

I say let them have it...You want to give it to BP (British Petroleum)?...Besides, like Alaska, maybe they sell it to USA for a quite reasonable price...Then, you have McDonalds and WalMart up there...Or, perhaps, Israelis move there when that state collapse instead of flocking back to Poland.

Well the Russians just want compensation for their stupid deal over Alaska ;)

Russians sold it to the U.S in 1867 for $7.2 million.

Must have been in the influence of vodka...

Can't speak for the daily mail, but the National Post isn't considered a rag here in Canader.

Isn't considered doesn't mean it isn't one! There could be bandwagon jumping as is so often the case in the media. It would have been bigger news but I saw nothing about it on major news stations.

What do you think about this outrageous move by Russian governement against all international agreements regarding the Artic ocean and its shelf?

Russia is not the only country that would like to get its hands on the resources of this area , and i guess they are just preparing themselves in case there is a rush by everybody to get in there and claim everything....

They are not going to invade the place or start a war over it...

I am Swedish... ;-)

But yes, from your POV Sweden is the EU-country for you. We are not a member of NATO (and the people don't want to join), we are EU scepticists and hold a big serbian minority of which we have good feelings for (my best friend and brother by heart is a serb). But Sweden will be Sweden... always an enemy of everyone else. Especially Russia. ;-)

I am Swedish

you Swedes originate from that old Serbian Balkan-Baltic bloodline. You are also Sarmats, no matter is it important now or not important to you or to anybody else.

You Swedes aren`t Germanics. Remember that. You are Slavs
