I don't see that in signals. I think the USA knows that the Vatican and western Europe are mistaken and that the other side simply must retaliate. The USA won't move a finger. That is that scene when Trump gave candies to Merkel and Macron. The States, I am sure, only asked Britain and Ireland excluded from retaliation, and Russia and China gave guarantees. Sure, they also talked about spheres of influence in the world AFTER.
