It is no secret that the American prison is a dysfunctional nightmare that breeds hardened criminals, costs money and is needlessly cruel to its' inmates.
Have you ever been to prison or jail in the US? Because I have. And depending on where you end up is the difference between staying at a resort or hell on earth.
I'll give you an example - two institutions are separated by some 30 miles, both county government run, one is a resort with basically no violence, clean fresh linens and clothes, television, decent COs, no issues with bugs or mold, activities, counseling, etc. Meanwhile, the other 30 miles south has fights and stabbings daily and you have to fight win or lose because otherwise you'll get everything taken from you - down to your shoes and socks and you'll be walking barefoot on cold moldy floors getting, people are getting whacked left and right - stabbed 20-30+ times then thrown 3 stories off a tier only for guys to meet them on the bottom and keep stabbing them so everyone sees, all the clothes including underwear have been worn by 1000+ people before you and have stains you can never wash out (you wash your clothes in the toilet btw), there's mold everywhere, cockroaches, bed bugs, gang affiliated COs that will put old people into a freezing room till they die of exposure for annoying them about receiving their medicines on time, etc. Until recently there was a gay guy working in intake who would stick a q-tip in your urethra - that's how they use to check for STDs. People would straight up faint from the pain. To top it off, he'd wear the same pair of gloves for the hundreds of inmates going in that day so you know there's **** getting spread. Thankfully they stopped that after some major lawsuits.
The prison that Mladic ends up is going to be a resort like most prisons in Europe. They are what in prison lingo are known as "sweet" - satellite/cable TV, PlayStation, fresh food, hot female COs, hardly any violence, your own clothing, proper bedding, new weights, no rules against hot pots, silverware, etc. It's like being in a dorm or a hostel - and the government's paying for it.
I believe that every male should go through a period in life where everything is taken from them and they get put into combat, prison, etc. That's where you really learn your own character and those around you. There's no faking it in such an environment and it makes you appreciate the little things for the rest of your life.
