The difference is that the bases are no longer there for the protection of the Europeans, but as a strategic and logistical hub for the US american deployments in Africa and the Middle East. Which is why nomeaningful combat troops are deployed there. Why should we pay the Americans extra for their drone strikes in Pakistan, or for treating their wounded soldiers in Afghanistan?

This whole thing, like most arguments that Trump makes, falls apart very quickly if examined closely because it implies that Germany is costing the USA money. Despite the fact that the USA would spend just the same amount of money on its' defence budget, even if Germany were to spend more, since almost all of it goes to commitments outside of Europe. What is exactly the harm done to Americans by that?

And fyi im just busting your balls. I do like Germany or atleast what it was (especially before 1945) and have family there and have been there several times. What I dont like is what Germany has become. Ive witnessed the transformation firsthand. Perhaps its even more obvious to me than a native because I would go there every few years so I can see the difference while a native sees a slow gradual change so it doesnt appear as extreme.
