What is also shocking is watching supposedly cultured people descending to racist tropes
Quite.
Even normally peace-loving Bratwurst Boy, is tossing back the popcorn as he watches "Israel flatten Gaza".
I suspect this is because of his particular views re: Middle Eastern migrants in Germany, and the incompatibility of Islam with Western values (as he sees it).
Even my perennial ally, Kania, is on the other side of the barricade.
Amazing how people will use their last breath to cheer Ukraine's resistance to Russian occupation, but not say a word about Palestinians fighting against Israeli occupation.
This is all Israel and Egypt's fault.
1) The original sin lies with the Israelis, who thought they were very clever in covertly supporting Hamas in the early days. They hoped their divide and conquer strategy would yield a more malleable Palestinian Authority. Worked out about as well as the Americans finding Bin Laden, in the early days.
2) The Egyptians are wary of Hamas, because it is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, to whom ousted president Mohammad Morsi belonged to.
3) The Egyptians maintain their side of the blockade, because they feel that as the occupying force, Israel is legally responsible for the welfare of Gazans. It also doesn't want to help Israel, by opening up a release valve that would effectively depopulate Gaza.
4) Basically, for twenty years these two have been starving Gaza (the blockade extends to things like concrete, boat motors, glass, etc), in the hope that the Gazans will eject Hamas.
5) The problem is, that twenty years later, Hamas IS FACING POLITICAL CHALLENGES. But not where it's blamed for the dismal state of affairs, but for not being radical enough. How about that - ladies and gentlemen?
Also, good job George Bush Jr. It was his bright idea to organize democratic elections in Gaza. When Hamas won them in a landslide, however, he wasn't there to deal with the consequences.
