Do any Brits resent excessive US influence?

Steveramsfan
6 Aug 2015  #31

The US military is only better than the UK military since the UK Military cut 30000 troops last year.
Before that they needed the UK to undertake any military action. Whenever they have gone in alone they have not won.

Yes I do resent too much coming back to UK from America.
The US should stay out of Europe and leave us Europeans to live in peace.

US should stay out of Europe

The US should have stayed neutral or fought onlyJapan and let Hitler level Britain to the ground and after the war not offered Mashall Plan aid?

Steveramsfan
6 Aug 2015  #33

I think you will find that the UK held Hitler's forces off before he invaded Russia and that Hitler declared war on the US before the US joined the war in Europe.

The US were contemplating joining Hitler so the US didn't come the the aid of Britain, it came to help itself and dismantle the British Empire.

The USA ranks bottom of my list of countries to live in.

The USA is superior

Yes, the US is ahead of us us when it comes to invading foreign countries and leaving behind lawless broken states controlled by terrorists (UK, we give them a hand, but it's usually the Americans' idea), consuming more than they produce, being obese, doping to win sport etc. But in all other regards, I disagree with you.

Fashion? No. They're still wearing shoulder pads and velour tracksuits. Infrastructure? Try getting around America by train. Agriculture? Read Fast Food Nation and you'll never want to eat in America again. National Parks? They're nice (if you don't mind being killed by a bear) but Americans get hardly any holidays so they seldom have the time to enjoy them.

As for freedom, we don't dress people in orange jump suits, send them to a hellhole island somewhere and water-board them for 15 years while depriving them of sleep by playing the Sesame Street music at top volume at all hours. We don't give people the freedom to carry guns without good cause, because we think it leads to people getting shot. British women have the right to abortions. All British people have access to free medical care. We are against the state-sponsored murder of people who either kill others or lack the funds necessary to hire good lawyers if they're charged with such offences. We make it a lot harder for our politicians to accept huge donations from lobbyists in return for voting in particular ways.

So while Americans may think they have more freedoms than us, I'd suggest we're the more civilized nation.

against the state-sponsored murder of people

Brits are against the death penalty for brutal serial killers who are a threat to society but readily endorse state-sanctioned pre-natal murder of truly innocent unborn children.

Hey, look on the bright side, Polonius. Some of those 'children' would turn out to be gay.

Polonius3
8 Aug 2015  #37

turn out to be gay.

2% - society could handle that, but the LGBT dictatorship would try to persuade them to stick their nose into everything, expand beyond their numerical strength and pose a threat to society at large.

Yes, the US is ahead of us us when it comes to invading foreign countries and leaving behind lawless broken states

No, America pumps billions back into them to rebuild them as the UK ponies up with a little chump change sometimes.
The US consumes more then they produce is not true, they are net exporters of of agriculture as Britain produces less then 60% of what it eats.

America needs to import NOTHING, and yes the US has chubbies just like the UK does,

The US wins many sports without doping, just take the Olympics, how many gold medals did the US win compared to the UK ?

Fashion? No. They're still wearing shoulder pads and velour tracksuits

Hardly lol,
Yes infrastructure, the US has many more miles of subway then the UK does, 1000 of km more highways and interstates, many more International
modern airports, ect.

Agricultures yes, 1000 of metric tons more then the UK could even think of, corn, soybeans, beef, pork, ect.,

Shall we compare since we are at it.......

USA compared to Britain in tons of food produced.

USABritain

Beef 63,590,000 tons 882,000 tons

Pork 8,574,000 770,00

Wheat 63,590,000 13,261,000

Sugar Beets 27,760,000 7,291,000

Potatoes 20,820,000 4,553,000

Plus America produces many crops that the cannot even grow in the UK.

Oh and I never eat fast foods (we save that for foreigners from the UK who lap it up).
National Parks are visited by multi millions of Americans every year with only an occasional UK foreigner getting attacked by a bear. (Another reason Americans carry guns) lol

we don't dress people in orange jump suits,

oh, no prisons in the UK is there, where do you put the terrorist that attack the UK ?

British women have the right to abortions. We are against the state-sponsored murder of people who either kill others.

(Does palm plant on forehead)
British have free medical care.......NO ONE in America is ever turned away from an emergency room if they need medical attention, money or not.

Oh America does have many more freedoms then any country in the world, that is a given,
As for civilized, I have to agree that America's Black and Latino gangs would chew up and spit out the gangs in the UK.

America rocks Loud and Proud which puts the Brits in third place behind America and China.

You Brits really do need to get over yourselves.

Amazing coming from someone born in a Muslim country.
America has been blessed with both quality and quantity.
God bless America.

The average Brit, educated beyond American capabilities, sees America for what it is - an absolute mess
Do we resent excessive US influence?
Absolutely
Not content with messing up their own country, America seems intent on making a mess of the rest of the world
Do we resent America's excessive influence on our own country?
I don't think so
America doesn't have excessive influence on the UK. We take what we want but discard the majority as inferior crap
We poke fun at America, roll our eyes at their foolish ways and use them as we see fit
America's days are numbered. Do the Brits care?
Not particularly. We are strengthened by thousands of years of cultural heritage, and confident in our superiority

Polonius3

Then why have Brits allowed themselves to becoem so Americanised? It would take a book just to enumerate all the examples.

The UK is a cesspool compared to America's clean swimming pool.

America's days are numbered. Do the Brits care?

Sure the Brits do, as they will go down before America does......that's a given.
Have any other insults for this American. :-)

That's why the world refers to "poodle" when talking about your PM's... :)

Steveramsfan

America has already ruined the UK with all its imported crap.

I would rather live in Afghanistan, Iraq or Syria than the US because I feel safer in a warzone.

jon357
20 Dec 2015  #46

I've lived in one of those and there is a reason that so many prefer the UK, despite crap American tv shows.

Polonius3
20 Dec 2015  #47

As Atch would say, another Christmas miracle has occurred. I actually agree with you on this. It's the lesser otf two evils synrome. I'd actually prefer Tusk, even Miller, if given a choice of Bierut, Gomułka or Gierek.

So Happy Christmas or Happy Hannukah to you, whichever you prefer!

jon357
20 Dec 2015  #48

Yes - happy Christmas to you too!

Re. American influence in the UK, television has a lot to blame. In fact during the 80s it got so bad that the government had to step in. Most of prime-time was dedicated to US shows (with crap from the cutting room floor edited back in due to the UK not having ad-breaks).

I see this in Poland too and I'm very happy not to have a TV set.

Re. your comments on Bierut etc and the lesser of two evils, it's easy to see why people prefer nice shiny American ideas to the hard days of old and it was a bit like that in Britain too, where in many ways WW2 didn't really end (and rationing certainly didn't end) until the 60s.

You have to admit though, the ease at which you can troll Americans is hilarious

hilarious

Yes due to the fact they are not passive-aggressive trolls riddled with complexes but for the most part a pretty straightforward people and that trait can be exploited like everything else. I bet money against peanuts that I could as easily troll you.

Naturally I would never engage in trolling, however it's true that some of them don't have any sense of irony or understanding of anything outside their country. Someone inclined to troll them can have hours of fun. Twitter is even better for that.

Others are OK.

And their government's & culture's influence on the UK isn't that big and in any case explained partly by cultural, linguistic and historical commonality.

We do have more freedom than you and your post illustrates that fact. You can have more civilized, I'll take the freedom part.

Well having lived in the UK,USA and Poland, UK citizens have lost their right to freedom of speech and the ability to voice their own opinion without the fear of criminal prosecution.

Britain needs a first amendment , in fact it would do well to adopt the US bill of rights.

Englishman
22 Dec 2015  #54

We do have more freedom than you and your post illustrates that fact.

I said that Americans think they're more free than Brits, not that they are. In America, if you're a wealthy WASP, you're relatively free. If not, forget it. The other day I read about an African-American woman jailed for life because her husband, a suspected drug dealer, had left a locked box in the loft, unknown to her and which she couldn't open as she didn't have the key. It contained either drugs or the proceeds from drug sales. The court said she was involved in his crimes so locked her up for life.

And she was one of the lucky ones. The cops didn't shoot her dead.

No need to bring race into this. It's enough if you are wealthy.

And she was one of the lucky ones. The cops didn't shoot her dead.

Maybe she had a safe space where she was protected from opposing views like the Missouri State idiots? There are certainly bad cops out there, but don't believe everything that CNN and the rest of the liberal media will tell you. They are as bad as FOX News, just at the other end of the political spectrum.

I agree with Englishman - Americans seem to have been brainwashed with this idea that they are 'free' - it is like some kind of public opiate.

Americans seem to have been brainwashed with this idea that they are 'free'

"The land of the free and the home of the brave" rings a bell? That idealistic view has a long history. Most Americans know, of course, that they are not really free like in "free as a bird".

johnny reb
23 Dec 2015  #58

I would have to stand by the fact that Americans have more freedoms then any other country in the world by far.
The Brits, especially, have been very jealous of this every since the Boston Tea Party.
I feel very blessed to be born in a country that offers endless opportunities to be able to reach your goals.
Let me ask you Roz, what freedoms do the Brits have that the Americans don't have ?

delphiandomine

I would have to stand by the fact that Americans have more freedoms then any other country in the world by far.

Not really. The TSA is far worse than any European airport security agency, and I've made countless Schengen flights between Schengen countries without even showing ID. Some things are better, some things are worse. Neither America nor Europe is "freer", although Americans perceive that they're free.

The Brits, especially, have been very jealous of this every since the Boston Tea Party.

Yes, we've been very jealous of the way that you made black people sit at the back of the bus and give their seats up to white people.

I feel very blessed to be born in a country that offers endless opportunities to be able to reach your goals.

Like most European countries, then.

johnny reb
24 Dec 2015  #60

The TSA is far worse than any European airport security agency

Could you elaborate on the word "worse" for us.
You think not showing your i.d. has anything to do with freedom or just a lack of efficiency.
And how would you know this as a fact Delph. since you have never flown in or out of the United States as being worse.

No we are not jealous of how the Black's were made to sit in the back of the bus compared to Scotland using Black women for sex slaves.

Like most European countries, then.

No, not at all.
Many many more opportunities and programs to excel while living with ultra modern conveniences.
If a young Pole has a choice to come to America or go to Scotland were do you think they would choose ?
Of course a guy like you wouldn't know because you wouldn't miss what you have never had like I would by having the best of everything.
