Do any Brits resent excessive US influence?

Englishman
24 Dec 2015  #61

I would have to stand by the fact that Americans have more freedoms then any other country in the world by far.

You're probably right. In America, anything is possible. First you had one retard, George Bush, as President. Now, Donald Trump is in the running, a man who thinks he can keep the people safe from Islamist terrorism by asking people visiting the country, 'Are you a Muslim?' and refusing entry to those who answer in the affirmative...

Truly, we Brits envy your land of opportunity...

johnny reb
24 Dec 2015  #62

And you had the crop failure Blair and now Cameron crying that your British Muslim citizens are being denied entry into the United States.
I read that article too.
Trumps plan has already gone into effect.

Truly, we Brits envy your land of opportunity...

If you call letting people that are a high risk threat into your country opportunity then you can have them all.
I hope you keep the doors to Britain open so they have a safe place to call home. (Better there then here)
Our Presidents job is to keep his people safe and that is exactly what he is doing.
Cameron on the other hand.........well, you have seen what London has turned into.
Is it a wonder that the Brit's resent the U.S. :-]

Englishman

The biggest terrorist outrage in history, 9/11, happened on your soil, under a Republican president. It took place because evidence that Muslim extremists had entered the country intending to learn to fly aircraft which they planned using as missiles was not followed through because it was felt that calling flight schools and asking whether a group of Muslims had enrolled might be seen as politically incorrect. Meanwhile, in Florida, a flight school owner wondered why a bunch of Islamist trainees were fascinated with controlling aircraft in flight but had no interest in landing or taking off...

We Brits seldom shout about our strengths, but I'd say one of them is having the best intelligence services in the world.

johnny reb
24 Dec 2015  #64

Which is all hind sight which is meaningless.
You can bet it will never happen again.
When London gets hit with a dirty bomb that takes out a half million people in a day we will continue your rational.
We Americans know we have strengths that no other country in the world can compare to so we seldom shout unless someone is belittling us.

America's intelligence (shared with the Brit's) comes off our military satellites.
America watches every military base, ship, camel and who knows what else throughout the world every minute.
America's NSA could tell me right now what you ate for dinner and what color the shirt is that you are wearing.
Don't under estimate America's intelligence as I have never see any better.

Which is all hind sight which is meaningless.

No, no that is not fair to you as you have made an excellent point.
The truth of the matter is that the United States Intelligence knew before hand about the attack of 9/11.
The government knew those Muslim extremists were taking those flying lessons and also Bush was warned about the attack coming.
It was not a lack of intelligence that 9/11 happened, it was no doubt an inside C.I.A. job to open the doors for an excuse to invade Iraq

even though Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11.
George Bush 1 wanted Sadam gone and never got to finish the job so his son George 2 and the C.I.A. came up with the 9/11 idea.

So my apology, you are right but it wasn't because of lack of intelligence services, it was the greed for oil.
Both Bush and Cheney should be tried and convicted of war crimes.

You can bet it will never happen again.

The same thing won't happen twice. But you guys have a potential president who thinks it's a sane homeland security policy to ask people entering the country whether they're Muslim and turn away those who say yes. Do you honestly think ISIS haven't thought of pretending not to be Muslims to get into the US?

You talk about intelligence, but I've met more intelligent amoeba than Trump. And the fact he managed to become a billionaire in your country tells me a lot about the quality of the competition.

johnny reb
25 Dec 2015  #66

Sad to say but ISIS is already in both the United States and Britain.
I will one better you though.
Did you know that TSA has never caught a single terrorist.
Did you know as of last year over 400 TSA agents have been arrested for stealing from passengers bags.
Do you know how many billions of $$$$ have been spent running the TSA ?
Did you know that Obama has been flying Muslims at night into the U.S.A. so camera's can't see them in converted UPS jets that avoid customs ?

They then disappear off the radar mysteriously.
One good thing about Trump is he will put a stop to this happy B.S.
I really have no idea how intelligent Trump is but one hell of a lot smarter then what we have.
He would scare me to have for a president yet Hillary scares me three as much. Like Poland, the lesser of two evils.
I do know that he is smart enough to have built an empire and has nicer jet to fly in then the president does.
Does Britain have any private citizens that compares to have the self made private wealth Trump does ?
You can't use just one man to compare the competition as the U.S.A.'s GNP exceeds Britain's by far.
I have no desire to google to run down Britain with their jealousy of the great U.S.A.
As far as you favoring the influx of Muslims into your country all I can say again, "better there then here.".
Poland chooses to stay a hard working white Catholic Christian country.
America chooses to favor the influx of hard working Catholic Christian Mexicans.
Britain chooses to favor Islamic Muslims.
Just another reason the Brits resent the U.S. as the British culture disappears slowly.
Now let's talk about Britain's short comings.
You can start.

The British have become entrenched in political correctness over the last couple of decades, with accompanying over-tolerance that forms the foundation of a multiculti society. Some might argue this is a good thing, and of course it has merit, but there is an inevitable backlash simmering as people yearn for perceived loss and fear of what may still be taken from them

Britain's love of a pint has turned into an unhealthy culture of binge drinking, lead by a spoiled younger generation that has not had the discipline installed in them that previous generations have. The Spice Girl's girl power and the ladette culture have a lot to answer for

British stoicism and the stiff upper lip has been replaced by the need to be offended and find a safe-place

Despite perceptions of a superiority complex the British are one of the most self-depreciating people, happy to take the **** out of themselves as much as everyone else. Some perceive us as reserved and aloof, which can certainly be true if we think we've encountered an idiot, especially a foreign one

We have had shame drummed into us for decades, we have been made to feel shame of our colonial past, our oppression of others and are we are embarrassed to fly our own flag. The French will always try to prove they are superior to you whilst the British know it inherently. Sadly, most of us are too scared to admit it, and certainly wouldn't want to cause offence by doing so. Those who do are frequently labeled jingoistic

Please feel free to add to the list

Britain and the US have a similar level of cultural influence on each other, which is to say almost non. The UK exports more to the US than vice versa, but economically and politically the EU is vastly more important.

Polonius3

similar level of cultural influence

Absolutely untrue? One might eastimate the amount of US influence on the UK as 85% as compared to 15% the other way round.
Teatime may be very British but the American teabag has all but replaced pot brewing tea.
Christmas is another example. Father Christmas once wore long robes, wielded a tall staff and had holly in his cap but has since evovled into none other than the American Santa Claus. Some may still call him Father Christmas but it's nevertheless that same, squat beer-bellied elf. The reindeer, elf and Arctic BS are all strictly "Made in USA". Not to mention Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is coming to town, Chestnuts Roasting in an open fire, etc., etc.

Also the American greeting Merry Christmas is increasignly displacing the traditional British Happy Christmas.
Other examples of the Americanisation of the British languaege and lifestyles are more than welcome. Please feel free to add your own.

Polonius, as always you delude yourself

American has very little influence on the UK. Back in the 70s and 80s that was a different story. But that was decades ago

American might have simplified the brewing of tea but who gave tea to American. You forgot Boston already?

You wan't to talk ab out who has given who what? What language do your speak? French? German? Dutch?

Polish?

Mate, pull your socks up or you'll trip over yourself

Polonius3
26 Dec 2015  #71

pull your socks

Witty ropartees will not change the 85% v 15% equation. Language and traditons yes. But other than that in terms of current lifestyles, customs and practices as well as popculture I will stick to my guns. Draw up a balance-sheet if you like and invite PF-ers to add to either side of it.

johnny reb
26 Dec 2015  #72

but who gave tea to American. You forgot Boston already?

Wasn't that where the American's confiscated the Brits tea and dumped in the sea and told them to scoot for home.
The American's had to revamp the English language with American slang to make it sound human.

but economically and politically the EU is vastly more important.

The E.U. jumps when NATO (the USA) says to jump plus the title of the thread has nothing to do with the U.E.

The UK exports more to the US than vice versa,

That is because the UK has more American contracts to fill then visa versa.

Roger5
26 Dec 2015  #73

Witty ropartees will not change the 85% v 15% equation.

I'm not sure what ropartees are, but if you had ever been to the UK, you'd know that outside popular culture the British are very distinctive. The US has had an enormous influence in terms of entertainment, junk food and popular music, but there are places I could drop you in the UK where you'd think you were on another planet.

The American's

You don't need the apostrophe, Johnny, even in the American variant of English. How long have you been doing that?

Pan Piotrek
26 Dec 2015  #74

PFers can add their side of it here Polonius, as they do and as I am

Yes, Johnny Reb, it was British tea. We taught you how to put the kettle on

johnny reb
26 Dec 2015  #75

Dat's American's slang I am talking about Roger. Proper English is just to stiff lipped and just ain't gotter'.

but economically the EU is vastly more important.

This may be BUT as far as the UK verses the American economy let me post the facts here:
The U.K.'s Budget Revenues $986.10 billion
The United States Budget Revenues $2.45 trillion
The United States is Ranked 1st. 2 times more than the United Kingdom

Pan Piotrek
26 Dec 2015  #76

But Johnny, that's the point - just another illiterate American

Then than there their they're colour color could care less couldn't care less

You've no idea what you're talking about, let alone how to write it down

How can we take you seriously?

Johnny, why are you comparing economies?

England is just an insignificant island off the main land of Europe. America is the greatest country in the world

You x times bigger and better than us in every way - how can we hope to compete?

But we still go pound for pound with you, little bantam weight that we are compared to your Tyson

Imagine if we were twice our size, still a fraction of what you are

We'd spank your bottom good and proper and send you to sit on the naughty step

johnny reb
26 Dec 2015  #77

Imagine if we were twice our size, still a fraction of what you are
We'd spank your bottom good and proper and send you to sit on the naughty step

Ah I think when it was the other way around that your Lord Cornwallis found out otherwise when America's rag tag army sent him home with his knee top knickers stained in shame.

More like another stiff lipped jealous Brit. as never as American ingenuity ever been trumped.
Another reason America exceeds the U.K. is because of land mass.
The great State of Texas alone is 2 and one half times bigger in land mass then than the whole country of Britain leaving
the other 49 States to brag.
'That's the problem', the stiff lipped Brits take everything seriously where Americans don't.
You guys put way to much starch in your shirts.

Pan Piotrek
26 Dec 2015  #78

Geezus Johnny, if you want to resort to which is bigger, go and Google American penis size vs British

Point made. End of argument

Good night

johnny reb
26 Dec 2015  #79

I didn't realize that the Americans have the Brits beat at that also.
Maybe that is because America has more of such ethnic population than the U.K. does.
Point made, end of debate for this morning.

ropartees

ropartees = typo version of repartees!

you'd think you were on another plane

I know. Sometime when I hear a real Scotsman speaking his harsh, guttural brogue my intiial knee-jerk reaction in all seriousness (not facetiously) is: that's not the German I learnt at uni. Only after a mo does it dawn on me that it's not German at all.

johnny reb

The topic of this thread is: Do any Brits resent excessive US influence?
The answer is yes because they an no longer come on the P.F. and degrade Poland with the pompous superiority.
An American Pole will pipe up and knock the Brit off their high horse and put them in their place.
Has anyone else noticed this ?

Roger5
26 Dec 2015  #82

I'd like to suggest that one of these heroic PolAms, or even a deluded fool like Johnny, choose a state of the USA, any state, bigger or of the same size as the UK, and list its achievements over the last, say, two hundred years. I look forward to listing a small fraction of the achievements of the small group of islands off the European mainland known as the British Isles.

johnny reb
27 Dec 2015  #83

I'll make you the same offer you deluded fool.
Take any one country in the British Isles and list it's achievements say in the last 200 years and compare that to America.

Pan Piotrek
27 Dec 2015  #84

Has anyone else noticed the amount of Americans claiming to be Polish because their grandmother once mentioned pierogi?

Only an America could claim to be from a country his family left 7 generations ago

Yet still claim to be an American at the same time

Bizarre, and utterly utterly hilarious

God bless America and all who sail in her

Can we put it down to tiny wiener syndrome?

johnny reb
27 Dec 2015  #85

Who here has claimed such a thing ?
And what country were your ancestors born in ?

Pan Piotrek
27 Dec 2015  #86

Ask svengoola

johnny reb
27 Dec 2015  #87

Another reason I don't respond to guest posters.
At this hour no doubt an American.

Pan Piotrek
27 Dec 2015  #88

Just mucking around with you Johnny, you're just so ridiculous

johnny reb
27 Dec 2015  #89

I can't help myself when it comes to the Brits still pretending they are number one.
They quickly forgot that you kids would be speaking German today if it wasn't for America.

Pan Piotrek
27 Dec 2015  #90

Not a problem for me Johnny, I speak German and so do the kids

The Germans make better beer than the Americans so it would have worked out well for you too
