Examples of popular Polish music?

Yes Doug,but there are tons of great Polish musicians and singers out there....I could post for days....and probably will...but it's getting late,so I'll end with this one tonight.....not actually Polish,but Slowak.....you know how Crow bangs on about this "Slav brotherhood",but I feel Poles have close links to Slowaks....you will understand most of the lyrics.

I like both of your very different posts....both a bit cheesy,but likeable.

I'm really quite fond of cheesy Polish music, because there's no aggression in it, it's just unashamedly fun.

Łzy are also another terrible guilty pleasure, especially youtube.com/watch?v=vpKjRW06trU

I'll give those songs you've posted a try now - I'm always up for discovering new Polish music :)

Yeah,I did find them a bit cheesy,but quite enjoyed it nonetheless!
It looks and sounds like a very old video but I bet it's not as old as it seems.
Maybe that was deliberate.

Milo, if cheesy is what you like, how about schmaltzy to downright retro? Check out "The Anniversary Song" as figured towards the end of "The Al Jolson Story".

Now if that doesn't tug at your heartstrings, I don't know what would.

If you like Pink Floyd you must check out this great progressive rock band called Riverside. They sing mostly in English though..

Hetman are always very listenable, in the Budka Suflera zone. Thanks for this. Love them both!

Can't agree Spike. It was the 80s. Years of martial law, youth culture anti communism and social struggle. The list of legendary Polish bands is long.

Republika
Perfect
Dzem
SBB
Lady Punk
Budka Suflera

And on and on........

And on and on.....

I'd add Manaam (nocny patrol)
Brygada Kryzys (Czekamy na sygnał)
Dezerter (Spytaj milicjanta)
and Mr Zoob (mój jest ten kawałek podłogi) - maybe the best single song about the prl ever before it was turned into an effin' carpet commercial....

Various Manx - Orla cien

Yeah,I liked that one,you have a penchant for the pretty girls I see... :-)

@Dougpol
I couldn't get your links to work.....probably me....

@mafketis
I'd guess you are a little younger than me,maybe mid to later 50's.
I liked Brigada Kryzys,very moody and of that time.
Mr.Zoob was fun and enjoyable too.
Manaam was OK but not keen on Dezerter.
Musical tastes has a lot to do with age,upbringing,surroundings and other influences.
We all have different tastes,but I love it when people show a passion for music of any genre.

all i remember from 90s is the disco polo era hahah

Budka Suflera

my dad loves them. i could never get into it imo the singer sounds like a guy whos had a few too many at a karaoke bar

22 Nov 2018  #76

Dirk,you are not much older than my kids,so I wouldn't expect you to like any of our "Old Music".
Just as I was not keen on my Dad's,like your Grandad,taste in Polish.accordian music!!!
But,as a youngster,what Polish Music,if any,do you like?

Dirk diggler
23 Nov 2018  #77

Good looks helps with everything in life :-)

Can't agree Spike. It was the 80s

For me it is 90's since mid nineties were my teenage years. Bands like:

O.N.A.
Acid Drinkers
Wilki
Edyta Bartosiewicz
Elektryczne Gitary
Various Manx
IRA
90's Kazik i Kult
90's Kukiz i Piersi

Of course! Those were the days:) Of course I didn't know any Polish bands in the 1970s........

@Dirk diggler

The only name I know in your list is Kult and I like some of their songs.
Not surprisingly,with me being about your Dad's age I didn't like much of the rest.
But that's cool.I think loving music is the important thing.

@Spike31

I actually know most of the artists you listed,and like most of them.
Acid Drinkers would be my favourites,Kult,O.N.A with Agnieszka Cylinska,Wilki,IRA,Edyta Bartasiewicz and Piersi all do some good stuff too.

Not so keen on the other two,but remember,I am old school....when hair was long and loud electric guitars ruled..... :-)
I also have a blank memory of anything in the nineties as my daughter was born in 1989 and my son in 1991......too busy in the nineties,even for my first love of music.....

So maybe you would like to check the Flapjack band - first I was surprised that it is Polish, then I couldn't stop to listen their album "Ruthless Kick" when it was released.

Punk? I listened to them too, and all I heard was thrash metal..

An interesting cultural difference between the US and Poland (at least until 10 or so years ago) was that the same personality and life experiences that pushed people into the punk rock scene in the US pushed young people in Poland to Metal...

Metal in the US was more about non-intellectual alienated working class stoners while in Poland it was over-intellectual alienated nerds (again the standard punk profile in the US).

Not sure what it means, but it's interesting....
