close to his family and felt they would be devastated

Family feelings was one issue, but he was also revolted by the digusting practice of hoimosexaultiy -- you forgot that one, or are you hoping to sidestep that issue. And what about religious qualms? They don't affect you but you are not the whole world, thank God.

It's not me who is struggling with his sexuality.

Things goes wrong in Norway

Just noticed this thread.
The Norwegian law sounds insane to me. It's political correctness gone wild. People either have XY chromosomes or XX. That's all there is to it. Either you're male or female. There are some people who have genetic defects that make them have ambiguous sexual organs, and those people should seek a medical solution that they're comfortable with. But aside from those people everyone is born male or female and calling them anything else is simply a fiction. Giving a teenager (who is born with unambiguous organs) the opportunity to legally change his/her gender extremely irresponsible and gives a young person too much freedom to ruin her/his life irreparably.

It doesn't work quite like that - there is the matter of endocrinology. This isn't just some whim, nor is it to do with the shape of ones genitalia - it's a much more complicated issue and has been around since the beginning of time.

It's still not a matter of choice (except for the ambiguous cases). If anything, a panel of doctors and psychologists should help someone with a particular issue make the right choices. But to give all teenagers the right to make an irreversible decision that will affect the rest of their lives is frivolous and irresponsible. I'd even say it's criminal.

The procedure in Norway as elsewhere, including very intense psychological analysis and two years of living in the destination gender, is very rigorous.

They don't. Transitioning isn't just the surgery - that comes relatively late in the process. If anything is criminal, I'd say it is forcing someone to adhere to an identity that is against their nature.
