If "encirclement" by NATO was the reason for the invasion of Ukraine, then why did Putin not say so in his speech before the Russian army invaded? Instead he went on how Ukraine has no identity and right to exist how Lenin made a mistake by granting it such in 1917.

This was not any speech, this was the most important speech of his life. He talked for an hour, citing all sorts of obscure historical data. Why did he not mention NATO? Because it is not relevant for his motivation to attack.

Everything is relevant in some way for something. But NATO was evidently not relevant for his motivation to invade. And how could it be, given that not only did NATO not pose a threat to Russia, but also since numerous Western leaders told him mere days ago that Ukraine would not be joining NATO anyway?
