contrast that with what would happen in a relatively normal country......
I am so very proud that Russia is not a normal country. It is what allows us, with just 150M and an economy the size of Italy, to punch waaaay above our weight in the world. It's also become a part of our individual mindsets. Russians are not normal people.
This wasn't always the case - where I support being weird. I used to think we could really benefit from a sustained period of normalcy - say, at least 30 years.
You know... not blow up our Tsars, not execute them and their families, not to stage February and October Revolutions, not to have Civil Wars, not to fight Hitler beyond what "cowardly" countries like France did, not to have Perestroikas, and GKChP coup attempts, wars with Chechens, or alcoholics as president.
I thought, if Russia has a nice uninterrupted run of normalcy - it's pretty much destined to grow immensely strong. The main argument for this, was how well Russia was doing in the decade before WW1. The fastest growing economy in the world, with a breathtaking rate of industrialization. On top of the world in art, music, literature, ballet. Our scientists contributing to important breakthroughs.
Our national love for extremes can sometimes become exhausting.
