Hey, BB, without trying to be patronizing,...You have changed. I like the recent, kick-ass, stand-your-ground BB.
Whatever you are taking, give some to Tacitus...

My self-imposed limit is three cups. Five would make me shake and that's not good when shooting at the neighbors' dogs.

Russians did make important discoveries, but they were far off what other countries achieved

I think there may be... three countries that produced greater scientific output? Possibly 4?

1) United States
2) GB
3) Germany
4) France

I'm really struggling with the France portion, however. They made more important fundamental discoveries in earlier periods, but in the 20th century we absolutely killed them on the physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, biology, and material sciences fronts.

When only three countries had produced more impressive results - while the other 200 did worse - I say that's pretty good.

Also, if Russia is a scientific minnow - what does that make places like Poland or Spain?

No one doubts that there are a lot of potentially smart people in russia.... the tragedy is they waste it on rationalizing horrible russian policy in every possible field and/or setting up mental barriers to isolate themselves.... no way to live.

Judging by this forum, Poland has a monopoly on sentimental idiots and pussified pseudomen.

But you still can't make a good Bordeaux.

We also can't make good Cognac (though one Russian brandy once won blind tasting contest in France and got a privilege to be named Cognac as an exclusion from the territorial denomination rules). And I think you should not expect to see other Russian Cognacs soon, as we do not plan to conquer and annex departments of Charente and Charente-Maritime. ;) But you are welcome to taste our brandy varieties...

'm really struggling with the France portion, however.

I was refering to the claim that the Russian Empire (up until 1917) was on the top in science, and it is pretty clear that France was miles ahead in the time period.

If I counted correctly according to Wikipedia the SU and later the Russian Federation produced 16 Nobel Prize laureates in science.

France produced 26 since 1945.

Russia does not have a great history of producing great scientists. Given the strain the war against Ukraine puts on the budget for education and science, and the massive brain drain Russia has suffered since 2022, this trend is unlikely to change.

I can't believe we are having this discussion and forgetting some of Udmurtia's gifts to the world

Shoes made of tree bark
Vodka bottles that you can not close
The Lada Samara
World beating amateur ****
That spaceship that lasted almost as long as a tin of sprats

The US has half of the world's lawyers but it is a lawless sh*ithole. It has more prisoners than any other country but is afraid of black thugs. It has half of the world's MBAs but lost almost all manufacturing sectors. What has stayed makes nothing we want.

It has brilliant money-counting Jews in its banking system but still ran up 31 trillion in unpayable debt. It has the world's most advanced army but lost every single war since 1945.

It has more oil than it can consume but it imports oil. It has more homeless people than India but keeps its borders open for more to come.

Anything I missed? Oh, yeah, the US loves diversity but has only one party. OK, a party and a half.

Also, First to the moon but needing Russia as space Uber...

And, for the grand finale, the US has one old moron in the White House who doesn't recall how he ended up there. And why...

I did not want to do this, but now I will have to explain how the metric you use is biased. It's totally incorrect to compare Russian and French scientific output by number of Nobel Prizes awarded. Any person with a brain, will understand that Russia towers over France in terms of scientific output over the course of the 20th century.

The Soviet Union faced many disadvantages, beyond being the leader of the opposing camp during the Cold War. While the geopolitical bias played a role, there was much happening on our side which prevented our scientists from getting recognized. Number one among the reasons, was the total secrecy that surrounded anything interesting. Many times we achieved breakthroughs earlier than Western counterparts, but our scientists were prevented from publicizing their work by overzealous security services. Beyond the crazy drive to classify almost any important research work as "Top Secret", our government also did a woeful job of making sure the work that did get approved for publicity was disseminated properly through Western journals or conferences. In fact, it was even difficult for our scientists to get a hold of Western journals - in many cases.

I have a question for the Western bootlickers...

What news outlet published this:

Russian soldiers suspected of mass murder in Donbas
Two troops are believed to be behind the killings of nine people, including two children, in the city of Volnovakha

I will give four choices: BBC, CBS, NY Times, or RT.

@Novichok, this quote is from RT. Of course other news outlets wrote about it too:

cnn.com/2023/10/31/europe/russia-ukraine-donetsk-volnovakha-family-killed-intl-hnk/index.html

RT wrote about it, because it's the first time RuSSia actually officially started an investigation into a war crime committed by RuSSian troops. I haven't found anything about it on TASS site in English though.

Bobko caught red handed in NYC????

On Wednesday, three more Russians were charged in New York with conspiracy and selling dual-use goods to help Moscow's forces. A day earlier, three other Russian citizens were arrested in the same district of the city on the same charges.

AFP reported that Nikolai Grigoriev, Nikita Arkhipov and Artem Olovyannikov were charged with conspiracy to export drone components to Russia. On Wednesday, the services arrested Grigoriev. The other two suspects remain at large, federal prosecutors in New York said.

Nikolai Grigoriev, who lives in Brooklyn and recently traveled to Russia on a Russian passport, was released on $250,000 bail and wears a bracelet used for electronic surveillance.

According to AFP, according to the allegations, the group transferred about 250,000. hole. (approximately one million zlotys) from a sanctioned Russian entity to her company based in Brooklyn and was in the process of shipping over 11.5 thousand illegal electronic devices to Russia. In the meantime, however, they were intercepted by the US authorities.

Western "press", on the other hand, brought the art of shoving inconvenient info into that black hole to perfection.

Paulina

...but they didn't have to.

RT's target audience is outside of RuSSia, especially in the West. As I already mentioned there's nothing about this case even in English on TASS site. If you want to "impress" me then show me RuSSian-speaking state TV reporting about this case.

Western "press", on the other hand, brought the art of shoving inconvenient info into that black hole to perfection.

What a load of bullsh1t. Western media report about all kinds of stuff they don't have to report about more often than RT and defenitely far more often than RuSSian state media lol

Looking at the US congress, more money to Ukraine is a long way away. Money to Isreal being held up as well. Event the bill that was passed for Israel in congress will get vetoed by Biden because it takes money from the massive IRS hiring spree. Biden was good for Ukraine until real leadership in the US was taken. This could get very bad for Ukraine very quickly.

Any person with a brain, will understand that Russia towers over France in terms of scientific

I doubt any person with an actual insight in scientific history would come to that conclusion. The Soviet Union had areas in which it excelled in (at least for a time) but also areas in which it otably lacked behind ( sometimes not due to their scientists but politicians like when the latter made Lamarckian theory mandatory). And if we talk about the entire 20th century, then the time periods in which the SU/Russia lagged behind France are beyond dispute longer than they were equals or had an edge (basically from 1945-1975, or perhaps 1980).

The only somewhat succesful time for Russian scientists in the 20th was after Stalin's death until the late Breshnev era.

Probably late 1960s to around 1972 or so was as good as the cccp ever was for people there. After that the Brezhnev doctrine (keeping countries communist at all costs) began to hamper the economy...

Similarly the post communist russian economy probably peaked at around 2006 and has been in slower or faster decline ever since... with no prospect for change.

poor dumb russians, they're really bad at running countries.... even their own (or especially their own).

Yes, yes! But (for some unknown reason) Russia has not ceased to exist for a millennium, while the (very good at managing countries) Poles have to study a separate course on the history of divisions and liquidations, and put an owl on the globe in attempts to tell about the antiquity of the history of their statehood. ;)

The first human in space, nobody can take that away from the Russians...what a race with the US that was.

Somehow I think that rivalry (if potentially deadly) is sadly missed today....scientifically, economically, socially....the West has been not better off being the victor....I of course would always opt to cheer from the western sphere next time.
