Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 7

Atch

It's supposed to stir up a bit of outrage in the virtue signalling community I imagine - or it's somebody's idea of a joke.

We write the date as 7 September 2023 thus 07/09/2023

Weird... I'm used to the US way 09/07/2023 or the Polish way 07.09.2023 but not slashes and European order.... sooo confusing.

Sometimes I do year-month-day but then usually use Roman numerals for the month 2023.IX.07....

makes me wonder who it is addressed at, and what the desired effect could be

It's addressed to russians and supporters of russia to make them think they're winning and to supporters of Ukraine to try to weaken support.... you're not stupid so don't try playing dumb....

I found it on Twitter - where else.

So why post a fake orc letter at all?

Looking at the 'letter':
- The department's name says Dli instead of DlĂ.
- The letterhead is the wrong font
- The address is centred instead of left-justified
- There's no footer on the letter with the department address
- No reference number

The orcs have a history of this sh1t. They're spending so much time pushing fake news online that it's no wonder their three day special operation is going so badly for them.

It's almost as ham-fisted as the one they did in the U.K. and claimed it was from Gove.

slashes and European order

That's how I'd normally do it. When I've had American staff or colleagues though I generally write it out in full due to the date order thing.

But I have, or the polish intelligence services have, finding and eliminating nascent russian threats

My one claim to fame is unmasking an actual r*SSian spy several years ago somewhere hot. She fled the country in the middle of the night. She tried to pretend she was from an English speaking country but raised in another to mask her chaotic accent. It wasn't true. She was from Petersburg. Not a very good spy though and now her fake identity has vanished without trace.

sooo confusing.

And I find the American way confusing :) But month first in British English was quite common years ago, though written in full eg. September 10th 1955.

Have you ever seen that movie with Alan Bates 'Pack of Lies'?

Was it about the Minsk Agreements?

September 10th 1955.

When I was at school they made us write September 10, 1955 and threatened us with eternal damnation if we forget the comma after the day.....

Now I'm doing a translation (a couple actually) where I'm supposed to use the British 10 September 1955 and it feels soooooo wrong..... I'm also expected to use British spelling which I accomplish by setting word editing to UK and changing them after I've finished the rest.... but it's not enough since it doesn't catch a lot of -iz- spellings

No, but I'll look it up.

There's a lot of justification for the 'reds under the bed' thing. I've seen it happen in real life and a family member has come across it too. They devote huge resources to this and we should be under no illusions that China is any less insidious. In fact, they're probably worse in their way.

This particular one was almost comically transparent. Wanting to date soldiers from a particular country even though it wasn't in the public domain that there were any in that place. There were a few other red flags which I'll not mention since it would give away where it was and a few other things.

In America, I suspect that the highly prescriptive grammar thing was in part due to social mobility among whites in the nineteenth century, immigration from non English speaking countries and the perceived importance of 'correct' grammar as a marker of success. There are still people there who believe you can't end a sentence with a preposition.

There's also the idea of maintaining a common standard that everyone regardless of ethno-racial or regional or class background can use without sounding weird (not really a thing in the UK).

Generally Americans are far pickier about punctuation than Brits (AFAICT) not sure why....

In theory either form is accepted in British English as long as you're consistent but if your editor wants 'ise' that's another matter.

No, but I'll look it up.

It's based on a true story. Russian spies in Ruislip of all places, back in the 1960s. It's the very ordinariness of it that makes it so interesting.

I'm not playing dumb, and I don't believe your assumptions regarding the letter are necessarily correct.

For example, why would it make us feel happy to know there is some lone case going to court in Ireland - in regards to an extradition? I would say this is aimed more at making Ukrainians frustrated with the government in Kiev.

So why post a fake orc letter at all?

It was not in bad faith. I even went so far as to scroll through the comments on Twitter, to see if there was a quick rebuttal. You can see that even Atch wasn't sure regarding its authenticity. What do you expect of me? I did not insist on it being real, for one extra minute after having given it some thought.

My one claim to fame

Don't flatter yourself. I'm sure she had a death in the family, while you ascribed to yourself the unmasking of a Russian spy.

Yeah, right.

I'm sure she had a death in the family

She didn't, and the matter was confirmed by the authorities there.

A fake passport too, and a particularly ham-fisted attempt to pretend she wasn't a r*SSian. She actually fled the country during the night.

Now you know what's going through my mind?

I have enough respect for PF, not to knowingly post blatant lies.

A lie that you don't lie.

I'm sure philosophers have a name for that.

Atch

Now, now, that's not quite true. In fact I pointed out all the reasons why it was more likely than not to be a fake. Apart from the reasons I gave, it seemed highly unlikely to me as an Irish person, knowing my country and how things work there.

Sophistry

That's a broader category. This is more the Dunces and Dwarves stuff.

One day I'll write a book about the spooky stuff I came across in a particular sensitive place. It was an interesting period. In the same job I used to sometimes spend Friday afternoons sitting in a butcher's window.

I can't help but feel that I am being held to a higher standard than anyone here on the pro-NATO or pro-Russia side.

Once in a blue moon I post a document of dubious provenance, and suddenly am being attacked by those that normally stay silent in instances like these.

Let me remind you, that Atch recently said Russians are forgiving of pedophilia. Then you, post regularly about some nonexistent progress the Ukrainians have achieved.

I suspect you know I made a mistake, but are enjoying yourself too much to admit you understand this.

You post a huge amount relating to the war.

As an orc, you obviously share your nation's point of view (and it would be odder if you didn't), though you'd do well to remember that several of us here are more intelligent than posters like Jim, joker, polamkrakow etc and that some of us (there are at least a couple here) have spent a heck of a lot of time pouring over texts produced by second languages speakers and some reading this are far from naive about orc deflection techniques and what they do, how they do it and where they do it.

progress the Ukrainians have achieved.

There's been some pretty good news over the last week, some shocking depletions of orc resources, and I suspect you can guess a# well as any intelligent observer why reports generally have gone a bit quiet.

Then you, post regularly about some nonexistent progress the Ukrainians have achieved.

Here is a new definition of "winning":

Only 400,000 dead instead of 800,000.

It will be revised when that 400,000 dead is replaced with 800,000. How many men are still left in Ukraine?

Did Z reclassify women as men to avoid being called a misogynist?

99%+ of which is from what your compatriots would consider "newspapers of record". Not once, have I posted something from a Russian-owned source.

it would be odder if you didn't

Thank you, for this kindness.

No one has ever accused me of poor command of your silly language.

jon357

newspapers of record

Selectively of course.

Why post them at all.

poor command of your silly language

Some of us have been writing exams and training materials for C2 level over the years as well as having decades of experience with texts produced by high level second language speakers. Discourse/textual analysis comes naturally to us.

I don't think that even Atch believed me about unmasking a r*SSian spook, though it is true. Worth remembering that some of us have seen a lot and seen it in some very very odd places.

Atch recently said Russians are forgiving of pedophilia.

I stand by that remark. I don't think they care. Many victims of child molestation are those abandoned, homeless, intelectually disabled or orphan children and Russians don't care about them. Not in the least.

One of the Irish women who worked with Russian orphans for 25 years recently said that they still contact her, now from the frontlines, some from hiding. She said that sadly orphans make 'good' soldiers because there is nobody to protest on their behalf, no weeping, angry mothers. One of her 'boys' was killed recently and she managed to get somebody from Ireland to collect his things from his flat. The person told her that the only sign that he'd had a personal life of any kind were the photos taken in Ireland from his long ago childhood summer holidays there. Well, he's in Heaven now, poor guy. What a life. How fortunate we are, we must never take that for granted.

I don't think that even Atch believed me about unmasking a r*SSian spook,

Oh I did!

ahem...... and I'll point out once that I noticed a pro-russian text in Polish was not written by a native speaker before any of the Polish members....

ussians don't care about them. Not in the least.

Why would they? Which russian values would lead them to?

jon357
10 Sep 2023  #1854

ahem

I had you in mind here, and of course I see much the same. A key giveaway is range (both kinds) and register,

pro-russian text in Polish was not written by a native speaker before any of the Polish members....

They'd not be looking for it or notice it. Most Poles are used to either native Polish or nothing and not the subtle gradations and variations between and certainly not different forms of Polish used by immigrants or second language learners. Or that an English speaker, a French speaker or an Arabic speaker would use Polish differently.

The orcs who pretend to be British in newspaper BTL fields are often the funniest. The more you provoke them. When they're on good form, they never stray above B2- and when you provoke them the more chaotic their grammar gets.

Once they looked at it from that angle it was obvious and could point out things I missed, but it didn't jump out at them.... I've been amazed at how some English speakers can't recognize second language texts either....

Most just wouldn't look. If there are flaws, the innate drive to decode utterances for themselves compensates for the flaws in the encoding (as Chomsky would never say).

China On 'High Alert' After US, Canadian Ships Transit Taiwan Strait

Good. Now China has a taste of how Russia feels when NATO transits Eastern Europe and lusts for Ukraine and its resources.

Just curious...How would the US feel if the Chinese and Russian warships came to visit the Gulf of Mexico? Hmm...

mafketis

...How would the US feel if the Chinese and Russian warships came to visit the Gulf of Mexico?

See... here's your problem... you think the US, russia and China are equals..... they're not.

The US is a Great Power, neither russia nor china is. Neither has anything like the diplomatic or soft cultural power characteristic of a Great Power.

russia wants to be a Great Power but it's system prevents it due to corruption and negative selection.

There are different rules for a Great Power (the US) and also rans like russia and china....

Got it?

Korvinus

of how Russia feels when NATO transits Eastern Europe

Cool story bro.

While in reality the last NATO expansion next to Russia's border happened in 2004 when Baltic States joined the alliance (also: Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria).

If not for the 2022 Russian chimp out neither Finland nor Sweden would even apply for membership.

Could you please give me definition of a great power? What exactly makes the power like the US great?
