Sorokin is a good advisor for books to read.

As you may know, if you listened to the interview, he still thinks the best book is the Bible.

He thinks Jesus Christ is the most Russian character in existence within literature. That must be a hard thing to hear for a Pole.

Sorokin says that no better story has ever been written, and never will.

True. Good folks in Poland think that Our Lord is Polish and St. Mary was a girl from kieleckie.

Polish history perfectly mirrors the life of Jesus...

1. Triumphant entry to Jerusalem - the birth of the First Rzeczpospolita.
2. Life and teaching - the Golden Age of Poland as European superpower.
3. Crucifixion - partitions.
4. Resurrection - 1918.
5. Second Coming - :) *smiles mysteriously*

Ok - I will bite.

Jesus' parallels with Russia:

1) Humble origins - Jesus was born in Bethlehem - so were we born on the periphery. Emerging out of the forests and swamps.

2) Jesus rejected Satan's offer of Earthly power. During the Mongols, during Ivan, during Stalin - we rejected the Western temptation of comfort and rationality. We suffered instead, as martyrs.

3) Jesus walks among the sick and sinners, promising redemption through suffering. Russia routinely suffers to save others - from Napoleon, to Hitler.

4) Jesus was betrayed by one of his own. Russia has also been betrayed - 1,000 times. Scourged by revolution, nailed to the cross of our own history. Yet we refuse to die, and each time come back 10X stronger than our last incarnation.

I admit that Russia is a very close 2nd after Poland in the most Jesus-like nations ranking.

Spain also ranks highly.

I think if you ask a 5 year old what's the most powerful aspect of Jesus' story, that they will say - "Dude died, and came back."

Russia and Poland are definitely top two candidates for dying and coming back.

Russia and Poland are unkillable.

And I think both our nations will survive. Despite demographics problems, and wars.

The Jews, many of them, killed themselves at Masada rather than surrendering to the Romans.

What about Germany after WWII? Totally destroyed physically and spiritually....only Poland with its disintegrations comes near!

That is a test Russia would have to go through first to prove the same level of resilience...

You get off relatively easily. The political need of two powers overrode the iron hand of justice that for a while where dangling over the German nation like Demostaons' sword.

....you can say that about everybody overcoming such catastrophes! For the people working through it nothing was "easy"....

For an individual, it could have been a tragedy; overall, it could be a catastrophic or unpleasant experience, the worst experience of their lives. In general, objectively speaking, Germans get off relatively easily. I stand by it.

The question - why did Germany get off easily?

Because it was too strong to allowed to be left on inertia?

Because both the United States and USSR found themselves in need of such strength reservoir?

Most of it is more of literal texts...interpretations of that famed "russian soul"....but nothing tangible beside the Mongols and Europe had them too....correct me if I'm wrong!

Well, there were some extreme ideas circulating, like the one by Theodore N. Kaufman, so I suppose Germany did get off relatively easily ('relatively' being the key word here) especially the Western part flooded with money of Marshall plan.

But thanks to that, 60 years later Germany was able to flood Poland with money. ;)

Na ja....maybe Russia would get help too once they see the uselessness of the "blood and steel" way....but still they would have to use the help in the right way!

...what you cite are the normal happenings of history....every country alive for more than a few centuries experienced them...it's not the same kind of foreign disintegration/ending as what Poland or Germany had gone through...absolutely not!

Germans were unique assets to both sides.

Your Germans were the most formidable soldiers you could offer up, and... our Germans were also the best prepared amongst the Warsaw Pact countries.

Germans -whoever controls them - provide the best soldiers on Earth.

Are you kidding? Russia's 20th century history is a nonstop nightmare for any normal European country.

Is that so-called Russian exceptionalism? Every major nation has it. In fact, Germany had the 30-year war, ravaged by each other and Sweden, Poland many times, the Chmielnicki rebellion, the Swedish invasion, internal civil war, partitions, the French religious civil wars, etc.

Once Russia gets invaded/liberated by a world alliance, its borders newly drawn (much smaller of course), it's riches shipped out for reparations, it's institutions observed and controlled by foreigners, it's whole statehood remade and renamed...etc. we could talk again!

You Germans - you lost. Even under Berlin - where the stakes were highest - you could not find the strength to continue to resist.

This means Russia is stronger than you. Stronger even than when the will of the entire German nation was subordinated to Hitler and Goebbels. Stronger than when you had to rely on Volksturm children to defend yourself.

Russia is many times stronger than Germany. So it has been, so it always will be.
