Yes, IIRC from a historical linguistics lecture Indo-European was originally more dualistic but a tripartite division in society emerged then affected almost all I-E languages. For example, that's when the neuter gender appeared (I forget the details but somehow Armenian got left out).


Sub-conscious organization, the human mind distrusts/dislikes a lack of structure and different groups of people end up dividing up the world in different ways. Quechua (Native American language with the largest number of speakers) is big into duality rather than threes for fours.

Fields like historical linguistics or cognitive anthropology/linguistics look at this kind of thing... a lot.
