My thought pattern at the time was 16 grams to an ounce instead of 28 grams per ounce.

Gold was at $1660 an ounce this morning when I figured that and since then it went up to $1672 but who listens to me.
At any rate $1660 an ounce divided by 28 grams per ounce = $59.29 per gram. lol
So Dirks gold chain is worth $1363.67 and not $683 as you posted.

I think my figure is correct. The chain being 14 carat, which means only 14 parts out of 24 are gold ten parts are silver and copper. For all practical reasons,

worthless. Dealers don't divide the price of one ounce of gold by twenty-eight because to get 24-carat gold out of Dirk's chain, all of the impurities have to be separated

so they can stamp the gold bar as pure gold. The process requires money. Twenty-nine dollars for fourteen-carat gold is the price quoted on gold exchange :)))

I did know that pure 24 caret gold is to soft to use for jewelry and other metals were added.
I deal with one ounce American Eagle and Krugerrand coins mostly which are 22 caret.
Even though I think some of them are stamped 999.9 pure gold.
Then there is the ounce and the troy ounce.
The American Eagle, African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf one ounce gold coins have one troy ounce of gold in them so their actual weight is 1.097.

I went into a local coin shop once years ago where the owner was shaving that .097 of gold off his one ounce coins.
When he put the coin on the scale it weighed exactly one ounce.
I ask him if all of his one ounce coins were short on weight.
Needless to say he is no longer in business.

Nah more like $600-$700 if I wanted to sell it quickly. $2k is like a Zales, Jarred and retail jewelry store price where they charge people $100+ a gram for 14k. Total rip off. Pawn shops usually are at $50-$60 but you can negotiate it down to even $30-$35 as they usually pay around $15 which is also towards the top end of what I pay. If I can get even like a 20 gm necklace for $300 I know I can sell it the same day for $400-$450 if I want it gone instantly, $500-$600 within a few days/week. It adds up plus I'm able to give jewelry as gifts cheaply.

But yes if it were pure 24k that'd be a different story. Very rarely is jewelry made with that high gold content because it is soft. In US it's all 10k 14k and 18k. Some countries like India go as high as 20k, 22k, but never seen 24k in jewelery before. In Europe for some reason gold is extremely expensive. I went into a few jewelry stores in Poland and thye had 9k, 10k 14k... lot of 9k surprisingly. The prices were like double what they cost in like a private owned jewelry store/pawn shop. I'd like to keep doing this in Poland because I feel the profit margins are way higher. Gold jewelry is very expensive there yet people buy it.

Jewelry grade gold is no problem leaving the U.S. with, it's the investment grade gold that throws up a red flag if over $10,000 in value.
