Not necessarily, it is a simple coping mechanism our brain employs. We are usually ignoring the inescapable fact that our days are numbered, even mortally ill people have a hard time accepting it. We know that death awaits us all, but when it arrives, we usually think that it is not our time.

That you would even make up such a lie reveals more about your demented mind than anything else. But as the article helpfully points out, it might take some time until old bigots die out (or alternatively, die off) but the economy is evidently more open-mindes when it sees a buisness opportunity.

Which was helped by the authors of the new testament taking the blame from Pontius Pilate, in order to make the new faith more attractive to the Romans. The thought that a man who was sacked by the Romans for being too cruel (and knowing the Romans, that was a huge threshold) would have hesistated to execute a potential rebel is laughable.
