This brings us to the mess that is Afghanistan.
The Americans took us into this as a knee jerk reaction to 9/11.
I kind of get that.
They wanted to show the world and the American people that such an abhorrent act against America would not.go unpunished.
I totally get that.
But they did not think it through.
The middle East is so complex that few of us in the West can fully comprehend it.
My personal opinion is that outsiders should never involve themselves in foreign conflicts if they have nothing to do with us.
The problem with Afghanistan is that the American financed Mujahadin had evolved into the Al Queda supporting Taliban.Who perpetrated 9/11.....the Yanks messed it up.
So the American led coalitian went into this complicated region and successfully killed off Al Queda, albeit that Bin Laden was actually found in Pakistan....
But they had limited success against the Taliban.
The coalition did have some success at improving the lives of the average Afghani
But that was never the prime motivation of invasion.
When Trump announced that American troops.would withdraw, that was the green light for the Taliban to arm up, prepare and wait.....
When Biden actually signalled the.withdrawal.that was the green light for the Taliban to attack.
I don't think we should have ever gone into Afghanistan.....have we learnt nothing from history?
But having gone in, for the Americans to leave so suddenly, forcing the rest of their allies to do the same is just shamefull and disgusting.
I heard a phone in on the radio today where a woman who has lost her son, fighting in Afghanistan, ten years ago, was able to.justify his death with the good we had achieved there.
Now, with the Taliban taking over, she can no longer justify her sons death and sees his death as pointless.......these are sad times.
