The Founding Fathers were for sure religious men of deep faith and serious conviction, I'd go so far in some cases to say, spiritual. The Puritans were also religious, yet their faith wasn't tempered by the divine Grace of forgiveness, but rather by a harsh, indeed, unbendingly rigid, code of swift, sometimes fatal, retribution for any perceived infraction interpreted as in contradiction to the Bible.

Of the two groups, I feel those who came after, namely the Washingtons, Jeffersons et al, to have practiced far wiser ways:-)
