To stay on topic, only Norman Davies among well known historians of Poland has written about the Socialist movement in Poland and even then only slightly. Excusable given that Poland remained a largely agricultural society until relatively recently.

There is. The leaves rot away over the winter and feed the grass nicely.

Lawns don't have to be manicured perfectly and in any case in Poland they get lawns wildly wrong. It's as if people think you can scatter a few handfuls of grass seeds once without ever topping them up or feeding them. The lawns in PL are more like an ageing man's bald patch than anything nice to walk on or lie down on in summer.

IINM lawns as such are a recent innovation. In the PRL any area big enough for a lawn was used for other stuff (usually small gardens or greenhouses).

That's a very Polish attitude. Everything has to be 'something' or 'nie-something' and nothing in the middle. Anyway, this is not lawn. It's those patches of grass they have for decorative purposes on city pavements. Far better to see them in a natural state with leaves decomposing, protecting the soil throughout the winter and more decorative than a sad patch of bare mud which is what you end up with. During the pandemic when they didn't carry out any of that nonsense during the first few months, there were the most beautiful wild flowers growing naturally all over Warsaw. Some of them were a metre tall. Does an arid patch of burnt summer grass look nicer?
