I once went to get new contact lenses and the optician informed me that I had the kind of eyes that might develop cataracts as I got older. He then tried to refer me to a well-known and very expensive clinic to have my natural lenses replaced by implants. Yes said I, and by that logic I might as well have a hip replacement while I'm at it, 'just in case'.

Probably because when you are young, the risk of complications during the procedure is lower. On the other hand, the question arises whether it is worth doing something "just in case" in reserve. Maybe you'll get hit by a car before you develop cataracts.
