That's right ... some are, but most are not. So why do the others need so many guns?
Most gun owners aren't enthusiasts though. The enthusiasts according to this article yes do own more guns than the average gun owner because that's their hobby. Most people wouldn't spend tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars if they weren't an enthusiast, collector, etc. and go through all the processes which cost quite a bit of money to be compliant with the law so as not to get a felony. I spend a lot of money on traveling because I enjoy it as well as cars because those are my hobbies. Most people don't switch or buy cars every few months, but enthusiasts, collectors, etc. like myself do. Same thing with guns - that's their hobby it's their thing. Most people who own guns own 1 or 2. As far as total guns in the US, yes most of them will be owned by collected and enthusiasts. It's the same with other hobbies - say 60's Pontiac GTO' (or vintage GM's and Fords for that matter) - most are in the hands of enthusiasts and collectors who most likely own multiple vehicles rather than non enthusiasts that drive a 67 GTO as their daily driver.
A crazy prepper will tell you that the 100 rifles and twenty AK 47 and then he decides to make a little weekend trip to Las Vegas.
His own brother said he wasn't a gun enthusiast, collector, etc.
So are you against all gun ownership, owning over a certain amount of guns, owning certain firearms (people can purchase bolt action/pump action/semi autos but full autos require special permits from ATF)? What is it exactly that bothers you about the 2nd amendment and peoples' rights to self defense? The bad guys will obtain guns regardless - even in Japan the Yakuza have guns including sub machine guns and will use them if they need to while the average citizen can't purchase a BB gun without a license. There was a shooting earlier this year in Chicago where 10 people were shot in 1 driveway - more than likely with illegal guns as no one with half a brain uses a registered firearm for a homicide (unless they plan on committing suicide or shooting it out with police at the end) kids in columbine obtained their guns illegally, the Paris massacres were committed by terrorists with illegal ak-47s, the this Vegas guy purchased his guns legally while in Sandy Hook the guy apparently obtained the guns through his mother who legally owned them. In any case, all resulted in massacres but their methods of obtaining weapons all differed from legal to illegal. It's what you do with said guns - same as with a car, knife, stick of dynamite, etc. You can turn anything into a deadly weapon. As we see in Europe now with severe gun control terrorists are now using vans which cause just as much death and injury as a firearm and I'd say is even harder to stop than a single shooter on foot.
OMG you stabbed a guy!? Wtf did you do that for?
OMG you ran a guy over!? Wtf did you do that for?
OMG you shot a guy! Ban the guns!
This is just deflecting personal responsibility. Like the population statistic I cited earlier - a bit over 500 murders in 2017 in Chicago. 10 were in self defense, 10 by Police, 4 suicide, the remainder all homicides with nearly 90% of the homicides remaining unsolved with no suspect arrested. And these unsolved cases just pile on year after year after year.
