My teen and early 20's was all about music-mostly rock, and you can't dig rock without the delta blues: Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Son House.

Who are some if your favorites?

A buddy of mine is such a huge fan of Johnson's he went looking for his gravesite when he traveled down that way a decade or so ago-he said it wasn't as easy as you'd think to find.

I like Elmore James' music.

Robert Johnson himself. Of course.

But my favorite is Son House.

Listen to the "Death Letter", by him. About showing up at a funeral for a girl he was planning to marry. No other song you have to listen to, to ground yourself right back into the Earth.

My homeboy works for the Smithsonian cataloguing prison camp songs and 1920 and 30s blues, so I know quite a bit about this period.

The Mississippi Delta Blues is the closest mortal man can come to understanding the Russian soul.

I still listen to Son House. He has a gospel sound I like. Letter is a great tune. Yonder Comes My Mother is another...many others as well.

Your buddy's job sounds pretty cool.


At first discovering, I thought it was music of suffering and sadness...a droning hopelessness. Then, I realized that's wrong, it's music of the longing soul.

Is that the Russian soul? A soul longing for something?

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best blues guitarist.

The Blues is what I love most and yes, I know Robert Johnson's music and loved your post.

Here is an old British Blues/Rock band that I am sure Joker would not suggest that they eat $hit.

I love John Coltrane and Miles Davis... When I was a little kid every Sunday morning my Dad would play his jazz albums.

My mom, the exact opposite...Beatle freak.
