@Joker

You can never go wrong with Steely Dan........

Here's another good Steely Dan tune.....

I couldn't find a live version of my last post, but this is maybe my all time favourite Steely Dan song.

These are my 2 favourite Steely Dan songs:

Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce

Steely Dan - The Royal Scam

As I said, you can never go wrong with Steely Dan....

A change of style now, these guys are not Polish, but they understand the Polish mentality.
This song is about the Warsaw Uprising, an event that Rich(Novichok) has slated many times as "Moronic"(Or words similar to that).

But these were desperate people at the end of their tethers...... logic was irrelevant.... all they knew how to do was to fight!

This is a pretty good Polish Rock song......

One more from Syndia and I'm gone.....

It is strange that I heard about Taylor Swift as a famous singer only 2-3 months ago. I still can`t recognise any of her songs. I am really shocked that I missed her on the way. Have I been so busy??

It's fine, you didn't miss anything.......

Enjoy some better Polish music instead, give this song at least two and a half minutes before you judge and then play it again! ;-)

My previous post featured Kwiat Jabloni( Apple Blossom in English)
They are more of a Pop band than the rather eccentric Lydka Grubasa, but they do some nice stuff too....

Back to Lydka Grubasa (Which translates in English as Fat man's Leg)
This is obviously not a band that take themselves too seriously, which is why I love them!

If you doubt me, this video just shows how popular Lydka Grubasa are in Poland.

My last post tonight comes from a band called Zle Psy,which translates into English as "Bad Dogs".

This is a VERY patriotic song!

Time for a few female rockers, I was about 12 years old when this came out and it was probably when I first understood the term "Sexy"......

She was a hottie... Awesome song!

She bloody well was! And your Steely Dan post was bloody hot too!!!!

I don't know about in other countries but in the UK the B side of "Venus" was this song and I have the single to prove it.

I saw Doro with her band at the time, Warlock,at the old Marquee in London, not a big venue, but superb for creating an atmosphere
and they were sensational!!!Doro has had a good career since then.

Thundermother were an all female Swedish Rock band that, unfortunately, split up many years ago.
But they were good and proved that you didn't need to be male to ROCK!!!!

My last post on here tonight is from Doro again...... some of you may not be too keen on her voice, but it's all a matter of taste, I like my Rock singers to have "gravelly voices".....

. I still can`t recognise any of her songs.

I cant name one Taylor Swift song. From the bits and pieces that I ve heard, it all sounds the same rubbish....lol Pop music sucks anyway!

"gravelly voices".....

Like this?

I think pawian could like the message in this one :))):

With the very telling title "The Man" :)))):

Very relatable (for women obviously).

From the bits and pieces that I ve heard, it all sounds the same rubbish....lol

That's what I thought too...
To be honest until some point I don't think I ever heard one full song by her and I thought that she sings some romantic songs for teenagers, so I didn't bother to check her music. That changed this year when she broke the GRAMMY record - Swift is the first and only artist in history to win the GRAMMY for Album Of The Year four times. So I figured that if she was able to beat Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder then maybe I should listen to her stuff after all and I did - out of curiosity. I listened to her songs, not all of them, obviously, but some of them hit me hard! And I've realised that she's not a teenager anymore, but a 34-year-old woman.

Another Swift song that I like (and she makes good music videos, btw) is one that is apparently her response to criticism in the media (?) towards her:

Pop music sucks anyway!

The fact that you don't like it, doesn't mean it sucks. I like it :)

Paulina
6 Aug 2024  #13

it all sounds the same

I wouldn't say so, based on what I've listened to so far. Btw, I'm not surprised her concerts sell out completely (she just broke a record in Poland too lol) - they look (and sound) pretty cool:

Those perfect bare legs and gyrating hips make her music even more lovely. 😋

LOL!!!! You can't get much more gravelly then Lemmy, he was from the tough north east of England, smoked like a chimney and drank JD like a fish!!!
A true rocker!!!!

@Paulina

Your pro Taylor Swift post was very well written and quite convincing.... until I watched the videos..... I thought they were both awful.... maybe I'm just too old, but I love Amy Winehouse and Adele.....please explain.....

Those perfect bare legs and gyrating hips make her music even more lovely

Pervert!

Anyway, I only have two posts tonight, both the same song, A song that I absolutely love, it is in built in my freedom loving character, first the original and then a cover, I am just curious which one members prefer.

And this is Saxon's cover of that song, I am pretty sure I already know which version most of you will prefer, but I just wanted to confirm my opinion.

@Paulina

I'm afraid Taylor Swift does nothing for me at all. Just don't like any of her music.

A song that I absolutely love

Now you really have surprised me. I love that song too but I wouldn't have expected you to like it.
Prefer the Christopher Cross version though.

Yeah, I don't get how she's so popular. She's the Madonna of this generation-a mystery of why so popular.

@Miloslaw

Christopher Cross, but I'm surprised by how decent the Saxon cover is.

I think they're great! Fun and funny, (and very well made) but with a serious message. That's what Swift usually does, from what I've noticed, she covers the message (which is often a difficult or painful message) with either fun or pleasant, calm music - thanks to this she appeals to the masses and young people.

Yeah, I don't get how she's so popular. She's the Madonna of this generation-a mystery of why so popular.

After listening to some of her songs and getting to know some stuff about her I totally get it now why she's so popular. I think she's singing about stuff that both women and girls can relate to (sometimes men and boys too) in an honest way that touches your heart - I personally don't know of any other singer that would touch upon some of the stuff that she does. 🤔

Well, that's OK, I'm not here to turn people into her fans, I'm not a "Swiftie" myself ;) I just wanted to point out that she doesn't just make some cute, silly or entertaining songs about nothing - there's defenitely more to her music than that. The music itself maybe isn't her the most strongest point - there are better artists than her in this regard. She's apparently most valued for her lyrics and I get it why - they're often clever and sometimes hit you hard (if you pay attention to them). I've seen therapists analysing some of her songs on YouTube for this reason - because she was telling about her bad experiences and traumas in them. That makes her songs relatable and cathartic for others.

One of those songs is the one in which Swift is telling about her relationship with an older man when she was 19 and how it affected her (judging by the lyrics he took her virginity) - it was John Meyer and he was 32 at that time:

You could see it as a warning for young girls - to be careful.

That's the main thing that she "does" for me personally, I think - her on point, clever lyrics and calling out men on their behaviour.

From the lyrics:

"If you would've blinked then I would've
Looked away at the first glance
If you tasted poison, you could've
Spit me out at the first chance
If I was some paint, did it splatter
On a promising grown man?
And if I was a child, did it matter
If you got to wash your hands?"

but I love Amy Winehouse and Adele...

I like, or at least I can appreciate, different kinds of music from different eras too! :) I think the only type of music I really actually dislike is heavy metal, but I don't claim that it "sucks" just because I personally don't like it :)

John Meyer

*Mayer, sorry

She's the Madonna of this generation-a mystery of why so popular.

Not quite. Madonna had a dozen or two songs which I know very well and like listening to. While with this Swift I am completely lost. I listened to one song on youtube to check her out and it is pop slop like thousand other singers who haven`t made it to the top yet. She has and that is why it is amasing to me.

This one is the greatest- with ABBA motiffs and a lot of black people, my fave race. Amasing!!!

Also, Taylor Swift wrote the lyrics and music for many of her songs, which you can't say about many pop stars, so I think that makes her more authentic for people.

like thousand other singers who haven`t made it to the top yet. She has and that is why it is amasing to me.

Well, for my part I explained what I think that makes her stand out. It's not so much about her music as her lyrics and the topics she touches upon in her songs. At least that's my take on it and that's what I like the most about her songs. Plus they're pleasant to listen to.

Here's an interesting Polish article about the hate that Taylor Swift fans and Swift herself are getting (usually from adults), about "not understanding her phenomenon" and about young generation's taste in music (Madonna is mentioned too :)):

Well, you see, for me it's fun, but nothing special... Just a nice song for dancing, like many others :) I loved some of Madonna's earlier songs when I was young though :))

Paulina
7 Aug 2024  #27

From Madonna's later songs I like this one (a rather unusual for her, I guess) - I don't usually like dark vibes much, but here the melody is beautiful and I remember that I really liked the video - it was cool and well made for that time. Both the music and video have something haunting about them. But judging by the tastes people have on this forum, I'm guessing that noone will like it here and that's OK - you don't have to :)):

Btw, I haven't seen that "Frozen" video in years and now I've noticed something that I wouldn't recognize back then - the Orion constellation in the night sky :) I wasn't such a stargazer back then :))

Actually, come to think of it, now as an adult I also understand the lyrics better - they're pretty wise and I'm sure relatable for many too.

I just listened to the song you posted and only made it 1/2 through.. That was horrible, the song stops in the middle to show some bad acting, then starts back up again.

This isnt music, its performance art for little girls.

Geez my ears hurt after that! LOL

What was "horrible"? The song or that it stopped in the middle? :)

the song stops in the middle to show some bad acting, then starts back up again.

I'm not a fan of that part myself, but I've seen an analysis of that music video by a professional, award-winning video editor and he liked that part (and the whole video) :)

This isnt music, its performance art for little girls.

Obviously that cut scene wasn't music, but the rest of song was. On the surface it's fun and catchy. On the deeper level many teenagers can relate to it, because that's usually the time in your life when you're the most hard on yourself, when you hate yourself the most. The end of the video seems to be about coming to terms with yourself, about accepting all parts of yourself - at least that's what I got from it.

It's not only teens that can relate - I've seen grown men finding something they can relate to in that song/video.

Geez my ears hurt after that! LOL

Are you serious? lol You must have a very hermetic taste in music ;)
